abadidea<p>do The Youths these days still know about Pokemon Crystal Vietnamese? So called because it was discovered in a market in Vietnam, it's a romhack translation from Japanese to English (presumably before the real English version released), except it seems to have been made entirely on the basis of a Japanese-to-Chinese dictionary and then a Chinese-to-English dictionary. For example, what's semantically quite close to "insert"...? </p><p>(my own screenshots from 2013) </p><p><a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/pokemon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>pokemon</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/romhack" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>romhack</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/localization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>localization</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/translation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>translation</span></a></p>

Stefan Bohacek<p>Reminds me of the localization efforts on Mozilla's Firefox OS several years ago.</p><p>"Ibrahima Sarr, a Senegalese coder, led the translation of Firefox into Fulah, which is spoken by 20m people from Senegal to Nigeria. “Crash” became hookii (a cow falling over but not dying); “timeout” became a honaama (your fish has got away). “Aspect ratio” became jeendondiral, a rebuke from elders when a fishing net is wrongly woven."</p><p><a href="https://archive.is/2025.01.09-014218/https://www.economist.com/international/2014/09/27/cookies-caches-and-cows" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">archive.is/2025.01.09-014218/h</span><span class="invisible">ttps://www.economist.com/international/2014/09/27/cookies-caches-and-cows</span></a></p><p><a href="https://stefanbohacek.online/tags/technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>technology</span></a> <a href="https://stefanbohacek.online/tags/language" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>language</span></a> <a href="https://stefanbohacek.online/tags/linguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linguistics</span></a> <a href="https://stefanbohacek.online/tags/translation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>translation</span></a> <a href="https://stefanbohacek.online/tags/localization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>localization</span></a></p>
Miss Gayle<p>"I feel bombarded by articles on the U.S. housing crisis, which inevitably display suburban tract homes sprawling across the landscape or promote skyscraper apartments instead. I look at these patterns on the landscape and think, “What an utter waste.” We are doubling down on a way of life that has no possible good future."</p><p>Article: <a href="https://www.resilience.org/stories/2025-05-27/growing-the-shire-not-the-burb-facing-the-housing-crisis-with-ecological-sanity/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">resilience.org/stories/2025-05</span><span class="invisible">-27/growing-the-shire-not-the-burb-facing-the-housing-crisis-with-ecological-sanity/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Sustainability" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sustainability</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/PolyCrisis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PolyCrisis</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Housing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Housing</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Affordability" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Affordability</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Resilience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Resilience</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/FoodSecurity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FoodSecurity</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Localization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Localization</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ClimateCrisis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateCrisis</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Community" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Community</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Economy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Economy</span></a></p>
