boredsquirrel<p>For users who want to try <a href="https://tux.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>, I recommend this: Do not listen to people who tell you to use <a href="https://tux.social/tags/Ubuntu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ubuntu</span></a>, <a href="https://tux.social/tags/LinuxMint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMint</span></a> or other variants. They all use the same complex and often breaking mechanisms, and can cause a lot of hassle.</p><p>Instead, I recommend these systems:</p><p>- <a href="https://tux.social/tags/Fedora" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fedora</span></a> <a href="https://tux.social/tags/AtomicDesktops" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AtomicDesktops</span></a><br>- <a href="https://tux.social/tags/UniversalBlue" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UniversalBlue</span></a> <a href="https://tux.social/tags/Aurora" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Aurora</span></a> <a href="https://tux.social/tags/Bluefin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bluefin</span></a> <a href="https://tux.social/tags/Bazzite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bazzite</span></a><br>- <a href="https://tux.social/tags/HeliumOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HeliumOS</span></a></p><p>Looking forward to <a href="https://tux.social/tags/SerpentOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SerpentOS</span></a> too, and trying <a href="https://tux.social/tags/NixOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NixOS</span></a>.</p><p>These systems are reliable like an Android phone, while offering you more freedom.</p><p><a href="https://tux.social/tags/LinuxNoob" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxNoob</span></a></p>
Dane<p>So, I run Pop!_OS <a href="https://sharkey.world/tags/Linux" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Linux</a><span> with the Cinnamon desktop environment (it came with the default Gnome). I'm tempted to give KDE Plasma a try. The question is: Is having three desktop environments going to cause some funk with the OS?<br><br></span><a href="https://sharkey.world/tags/LinuxQuestions" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LinuxQuestions</a> <a href="https://sharkey.world/tags/LinuxNoob" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LinuxNoob</a> <a href="https://sharkey.world/tags/PopOS" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#PopOS</a> <a href="https://sharkey.world/tags/poposlinux" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#poposlinux</a></p>
Marcus Scott<p>When I was 16, I tried Ubuntu for fun and it was neat, but I didn't really get it. For some reason I really want to try Linux again. This next month (or more) I am going to give it ago. Does anyone have any tips or resources? I am going with Linux Mint.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Linux_tips" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux_tips</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/LinuxNoob" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxNoob</span></a></p>
What's going Dom?<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://appdot.net/@finner" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>finner</span></a></span> here's a question I've failed to find an answer to so far: is there a way to test/install the new Nvidia beta driver (555) on an immutable distro, bazzite in my case? <br><a href="https://rollenspiel.social/tags/LinuxNoob" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxNoob</span></a></p>
SP⟁CED GO⟁T<p>Is there a hashtag for people interested in moving to <a href="https://appdot.net/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> or people who have moved recently that have questions that I could follow to try and help people out? If not, we should settle on one and try and make it known. The more people we can help to get away from the likes of Microsoft the better. <a href="https://appdot.net/tags/LinuxNoob" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxNoob</span></a> maybe? Looks like there may be some posts with that hashtag already.</p>
BeAware :fediverse:<p>So, quick Linux Mastodon Admin question from a noob...</p><p>If I want to cronjob certain tootctl commands to run weekly can I just put them in the crontab with @weekly? I tried using the script from <a href="https://ricard.dev/improving-mastodons-disk-usage/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">ricard.dev/improving-mastodons</span><span class="invisible">-disk-usage/</span></a> but it doesn't seem to run anymore after the last few Mastodon updates.</p><p>When setting up the script originally, I used the traditional way of setting it weekly, but I saw in the crontab that there's a few already in there with @weekly set so I was wondering if I could just set the commands themselves in the crontab like that.</p><p>Thanks for any help. Appreciate it.</p><p><a href="https://social.beaware.live/tags/MastoAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastoAdmin</span></a> <a href="https://social.beaware.live/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://social.beaware.live/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://social.beaware.live/tags/LinuxNoob" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxNoob</span></a> <a href="https://social.beaware.live/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a></p>
