MarkG<p>I got some call from a random number. It was a guy who claimed my number had dialed him. I assured him I had made no such call. He didn't believe me. He felt I was a telemarketer, and as such, invited me to meet him so I could get the "beating I deserve". I politely declined his offer and bid him adieu.</p><p>But, I share his displeasure with telemarketers. And I note that frequently they come from what appears to be local numbers, even if it's clearly from an overseas caller. So, I do wonder if my number was actually portrayed by a telemarketer to this gentleman. Does anyone know how such a thing may work? And what can be done to prevent such a possibility?</p><p>I checked my phone's settings, and found that my phone is encrypted. But, I also found, under "credential storage", that a whack of oddball entities are listed as having "trusted credentials" (see image -- it goes on much longer than the screenshot). Anyone else have a similar list? Since you mentioned your phone...</p><p>If you haven't already, consider keeping your Pixel and loading an alternative version of Android. I'm enjoying <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/GrapheneOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GrapheneOS</span></a> (<a href="https://grapheneos.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">grapheneos.org/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>), but <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Lineage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Lineage</span></a> and /e/OS are popular as well.</p><p>All of these give you control over how much (or little) you want Google in your phone. For example, I enable the Google Play store to get access to my paid apps, but keep most everything else turned off.</p><p>EDIT: Scrolling down your posts a bit suggests that I'm preaching to the choir, in which case please ignore me 😅</p>

But my (2018) phone stopped updating as of Android 8.0.</p><p>I looked into installing an Open Source OS ("<a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Lineage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Lineage</span></a>"), but it says I need at least Android 10 first. 🤬 </p><p>My phone is only 6 years old. Not a damn thing wrong with it. 1440x2880 AMOLED scratch resistant screen. 8 core 2.8Ghz CPU. Wireless charging. Last time it was all browsers and email apps.
