Lehmann Printing and Lithography Company, Label for Pony Brand Prepared Mustard, 3.5 × 4.3 in, San Francisco, ca. 1930s.
This hand-painted label, among dozens in the Lehmann archive (https://oa.letterformarchive.org/?dims=Collection&vals0=Lehmann%20Label%20Collection&friendly0=Lehmann%20Label%20Collection), was used as a sample to show clients in the food industry. A tiny brush produced every element as it would be seen in print (except the ingredients, which are represented by placeholder scribbles).
We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary with an exhibition of our most beloved artifacts—100 objects selected by the 10 teams who steward the collection.
10 × 10 for 10 is on view until October 2025.

After India and Belgium, we fly across the Atlantic for a look behind the scenes of the recent American Sign Museum expansion. 'Magic on Main Street' is the third BLAG Meet session (https://bl.ag/meet).
I got to see the new spaces last month, and the report is here: https://bl.ag/my-week-at-the-american-sign-museum/. Saturday's session will only scratch the surface, but will give you the opportunity to hear from those that brought the whole thing together.
Next at BLAG Meet (https://bl.ag/meet) We'll hear from the Crickx Research Group about their work investigating the life and work of 'typographic letterer' Chrystel Crickx.
I've previously shared the project at bl.ag online (https://bl.ag/peeling-back-the-layers-of-chrystel-crickxs-typographic-legacy/), and the Publi Fluor book (http://surfaces-utiles.org/publi-fluor-affaires-de-lettres-a-bruxelles-letterzaken-in-brussel-letter-business-in-brussels.html?ref=bl.ag) was one of those in 'Book Club' in BLAG 06 (https://bl.ag/06).
cc @incroyable_dls — please remind me who else from the group is on here please!
BLAG Meet: Inside Issue 06 is free, online, and features five hours of talks, interviews, studio visits, and demonstrations: https://bl.ag/meet.
We kick off with @matratype and her quest to learn and devise the language to describe letterforms on India’s vibrant signage. (See previous post here: https://typo.social/@matratype/114042322483513686.)
I'm excited to see where these investigations have led to, and how they're being incorporated into the India Street Lettering project.
BLAG Meet is happening this Saturday, 26 April, with a dozen sessions packed with even more adventures in sign painting from contributors to Issue 06 of the magazine.
It's free and all online, with details of the line-up and registrations available via https://bl.ag/meet/.
For a look inside BLAG 06, visit https://bl.ag/06.

Anyone need something pen-and-ink to focus on? Join my calligraphy guild's next workshop!
Wonderful instructor Judy Detrick will be teaching us a Dutch Masters script. It's a lightly gothic/somewhat secretary hand with tons of potential for wild flourishing and creative adaptation.
It's Tuesday mornings (Pacific) starting *today*, BUT recordings are available for SIX MONTHS!!

Any guesses for why an apostrophe precedes each letter in this print?

Varvara Stepanova, Книга и революция (The Book and the Revolution), 1929 and 1930.
Often mentioned only alongside her husband, Alexander Rodchenko (whose photography was used here), Stepanova was an accomplished artist in her own right. She designed the covers and interiors of this journal of politics, culture, criticism, and bibliography.

20 years ago I posted a night shot of this sign. Still one of my favorites in the city. Needs repair!
Two #AmperSand efforts, today! Including my first attempt using sea glass. This was at our old favourite, Cockenzie.
Happy birthday @letterformarchive — 10 this year
For those able to get to San Francisco between now and October, be sure to visit this special exhibition:

The exhibition is accompanied by an events programme that unfolds across the year, starting with archive founder Rob Saunders and @stewf discussing the archive's origins and its approaches to collecting objects for public access:
