"Most Europeans support #climate action. In 2023, 93% of EU citizens rated the climate crisis as a serious issue, and 88% supported actions to achieve climate-neutral status by 2050."

A #JustTransition is key:
"Policymakers can recast climate action not as an elite agenda but as a collective endeavour, by partnering with a broad set of actors."

The Guardian · Despite 2024’s ‘greenlash’, the fight against climate breakdown can still be won. Here’s howBy Jane Gingrich

Feeling a bit warm today? Yeah, me too.

We don’t have to just sit by and quietly hope the decision makers do the right thing. We can all be part of making change happen.

I’ll be back in Newcastle to join Rising Tide’s blockade of the world’s biggest coal port next week, 22-24 November, alongside my friends Rebecca Vassarotti, Jo Clay and thousands of others.

See you there?

Fortune Magazine calls the Dutch court ruling overturning the injunction that would have forced Shell to reduce its emissions to 45% of 2019 levels within 6 years a "Pyrrhic victory" for Shell:

-the Court of appeal recognizes that protection from climate change is a human right

-the decision did not rule out enforcement of "more specific" emission reduction strategies in the future, such as forcing them to stop new investments in oil and gas fields

-"Third, the case has already spurred the creation of regulatory obligations to reduce emissions."

Fortune · Shell’s Pyrrhic victory may well set the stage for more corporate climate accountabilityBy Thom Wetzer

I have come to the conclusion that the positions by the three BC Political Parties boil down to this. Two are obvious, one, the NDP, much less so.

BC Conservatives: Drill Baby Drill Forever cuz God will eventually save us from our own stupidity, or we'll go to heaven anyway so it doesn't matter.

BC Greens: LNG is just lipstick on a fossil fuel pig. It needs to stop as part of a strategy of transition for workers and the economy. (see link)

BC NDP: We believe in Climate Change and that we should reduce our emissions. But workers vote. So we're going to string the industry along for long enough that people get jobs for awhile and we get donations. Hopefully it'll all just collapse and we can move people to other industries before we actually start shipping this liquified idiocy in large amounts out of BC.

This article elaborates why there is belated but growing attention to the idea that regular workers who happened by circumstance to have been embedded in the fossil fuel industry need to be taken care of.

A pool of resentment and reluctance that can have the same effect on our energy modernization as a gram of carborundum circulating in a 300 kg IC engine. With politics being our means of expression here, it can bring the machine to a grinding halt.

The Stanford Daily · Congo Week teach-in calls for a more sustainable, socially-responsible mining industryBy Helen Katz

"A #JustTransition agenda for investors focused on mining would build on three priorities: respecting communities, protecting workers and developing local economies. With its vast impacts on land, #mining must respect local communities, in particular through securing the free, prior and informed consent of Indigenous Peoples for its activities. "

A #JustTransition must include communities that now make their living from #OilAndGas.

"Most #OilAndGas communities do not need economic stimulus policies that provide immediate relief. What they need are holistic economic development strategies that can cultivate new industries – building on their existing strengths – that will enable them to prosper into the future."

@ChrisMayLA6 Money is a social construct used to direct how people spend their time and to allocate and share out resources. Banks create new money every time they issue a loan. We are talking about mobilising people (workers) and equipment to build adaptations (eg public transport, insulated homes, reconfiguring manufacturing to new products etc.) - and shifting consumption patterns so everyone has enough to eat. It's a choice. We can choose a #JustTransition $9 trillion?- it's political choice

"...now is not the time to move away from fossil fuels when the country is still reliant on them"
🤔
Let's try that logic in another domain:
'Now's not the time to kick my opiate addiction, while I'm still reliant on it'
😔
-Wouldn't we suggest a variety of measures to wean someone off it?
And in the context of the article, if there were measure available for pain control in the longer term that were not addictive, wouldn't we be recommending them for new situations?

I was so glad to hear about my old friends, the Ute tribe is transitioning away from their historic source of income, fossil fuels, into solar energy farming.

Joe Biden putting a native American in his cabinet doesn't get enough respect from the left side of the aisle imo. Anyways, I'm so happy that we're trying to help make it a just transition.

Been thinking of my late mentor & collaborator Dr. Saleemul Huq & wondering what he would have had to say about #COP28. Or how his presence there might have informed, inspired, interrupted different discussions, as it had in all prior COPs. Pretty sure he would have had scathing words at the end.

Perhaps he was spared having to witness paltry commitments to #LossAndDamage & #Adaptation #climatefinance & lack of concrete plans on #JustTransition #fossilfuels
