Ross of Ottawa<p>At first I found it confusing that the Japanese word "omoshiroi" (おもしろい) could mean funny OR interesting. I mean, how was I to know which was intended in a sentence?</p><p>Well context tends to help, but beyond a writer's intent, I rather like suggestion that interesting things are also enjoyable and learning is entertaining. </p><p>Is there a fuzziness between those two meanings in usage sometimes? I barely know what 父上 means (roughly, "father" for the kind of people who wear really expensive clothes). I've never actually heard any American use this word, but it dawned on me that it might be wildly inappropriate for any American to use this word.</p><p>The problem is that this word implies that some people are above others, which is out of line with American ideals of egalitarianism.</p><p>1/2</p>
