Flipboard Culture Desk
The Northern Irish band Kneecap are at the center of a controversy after video emerged of a member saying: "The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP" at a gig in November 2023. The Irish-language rap trio formed in 2017, and reached a new audience when a semi-fictionalized film starring Michael Fassbender won a British Academy of Film Award and was shortlisted for an Oscar nomination. Multiple venues have canceled Kneecap's concerts, but the band's manager says that they are victims of a smear campaign because of their outspoken support for Palestine, most recently at the Coachella festival, where they described Israel's military action in Gaza as "U.S.-funded genocide." iamBullivant
On 2 January 2007 Irish became an official and working language of the EU. However, under a derogation granted by the Council, not all documents were translated into Irish at that point. From 1 January 2022 Irish became officially on an equal footing with the EU's other 23 official languages. For the Irish speaking community this has been a mixed blessing with many viewing it as a waste of money that could be better spent elsewhere.

#Ireland #Gaeilge #Irish #IrishHistory #IrishLanguage #EU

Flipboard Culture Desk
Amid so much talk of bad folks, it's comforting to read about good people doing good things. Case in point, Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy and his artist wife Yvonne McGuinness, who have bought an iconic movie theater in Dingle, Ireland, which closed in 2021 due to rising costs and falling attendance. The Phoenix opened as a dance hall and cinema in 1919; devastating fires in 1921 and 1938 gave it its name.

“I’ve been going to see films at the Phoenix since I was a young boy on summer holidays,” Murphy told the Irish Independent. “My Dad saw movies there when he was a young man before me, and we’ve watched many films at the Phoenix with our own kids. We recognise what the cinema means to Dingle.” The Phoenix is the only cinema in a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) area in Ireland, and the new owners say this will be acknowledged in its programming. Martin Nutty
Una Mullally takes note of dramatically shifting takes on the #IrishLanguage by young creatives. A language which was on the edge of the grave is pulling back from the edge as artists assert their Irish identity by embracing #Gaeilge as an increasingly important or central element of their finished work

#IrishCulture #IrishArtists #IrishCreatives

https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2022/12/26/una-mullally-our-ancient-language-is-being-made-modern/

Martin Nutty
@strangeforms

It is interesting now to see many people referring to #Gaeilge as elitist especially in the area of Gaeil Scoileanna.

It used to be that the #IrishLanguage was a mark of impoverishment and backwardness, now it has evolved to a positive expression of Irish identity that is impenetrable to many other cultures, Much work to be done yet of course

Léan Ní Chuilleanáin
This isn't an inherent trait, of course. It's a product of some brutal and tragic history and of the reduction in scope that Irish suffered as a result.

Still, it feels valuable to me, to have access to a whole entire *language* that simply has no truck with the ills of late capitalism. Even if the reasons for that are circumstantial.

(Watch me resist a misty-eyed reference to the way Irish has no verb "to have".)
