I've been on hunger strike since June 5th. I began it as a protest against the illegal and yet unredressed extradition from Germany to Hungary a year ago, the repressive persecution of anti-fascists, the prejudicial and questionable conduct of the trial, as well as the ongoing solitary confinement and the inhumane conditions in Hungarian prisons. Now, after almost six weeks, I've decided to pause my hunger strike.

I don't want to put any further strain on my health, because I feel that if I don't turn back now, it will soon be too late. Even if my demands were met, it would be of little use. I would be scarred for life, and perhaps already am. I never wanted to let it get this far; I naively hoped that a step as radical as the hunger strike would finally raise awareness among those in positions of responsibility and everyone who can make a difference, so that they would take action after a year of reassurances, smiles, and ignorance.

There's not much left of me now. My body – a skeleton, with an unbroken, combative, and vibrant spirit. It smiles, seeks freedom and community on the horizon, and refuses to accept that there is no justice. But I'm not ready to take the step into imminent death. Sure, it's uncertain; there may still be days, maybe weeks. But if I were to lose consciousness, I would incur a debt toward the people fighting by my side, a debt I'm not ready to burden anyone with. Just as I'm not ready to subject myself to coercive measures.

On July 1, I was transferred to a prison hospital 250 km from Budapest, as even then, serious concerns were being raised about my health. The new place is quieter than the prison in the big city, but just as isolated, if not more so. Contact with my family is just as limited. My lawyer, always an indispensable support, now needs a whole day to visit me. During my one-hour walk in the yard, I don't meet any fellow inmates. I spend the remaining 23 hours in my cell, as there are no recreational activities here. The loneliness is tearing me apart, homesickness lingers on the horizon. Medically, it is possible to nurse my body back to health here, but a mental recovery seems impossible even here. With an imminent transfer back to Budapest, nothing would have changed, because what made the hunger strike a necessity awaits me there. Neither hospital nor prison in Hungary can be a solution.

My demands remain unchanged! They must be returned to Germany or placed under house arrest and subjected to a due process of law. I am determined not to remain silent tomorrow and will continue to protest as long as there is a need to do so.

I am calling off the strike now so that no one is responsible for long-term or permanent health damage. However, this step does not release anyone from the responsibility to create humanitarian, pain- and suffering-free prison conditions for all, to conduct independent, due process that does not prejudge, and to ensure the integrity of prisoners, respecting their dignity instead of despising and punishing them. If this does not happen, and if my demands continue to be ignored, I am determined to resume the hunger strike.

I'm demanding what's necessary—that I can be home with my family, that I can fulfill my potential through school, work, etc., that I can prepare for the trial on equal terms and not be buried alive in a cell. I'm still waiting for a clear and honest statement, an apology from those responsible for the extradition, and an offer of reparations. Even if it comes last, it's the most important thing to me.

Thanks to all those who have spoken out, who stand by our side, and to those who have courageously stood there for a long time, to those who unswervingly advocate for necessary anti-fascism, to those who support, who sacrifice nights and days, who donate and are anchor points. This diversity means resistance and utopia at the same time. My thoughts are always with family and closest companions, sensing the pain they are going through and admiring how bravely and selflessly they endure. My thanks today has words. But rest assured, the seed of solidarity with what is possible lies in fertile soil. So I hope that not only I, but many others have been able to unite courage and willpower in the last few weeks to look forward hand in hand, never forgiving, but with a smile."

In solidarity. A Presto, mi farò vivo.

Maya

in German below

https://www.basc.news/majas-erklaerung-zur-beendigung-des-hungerstreiks/

Her health had deteriorated significantly. Hopes are turning to Foreign Minister Wadephul.

"Nonbinary anti-fascist Maja T. was on hunger strike in Hungarian custody for five and a half weeks, 40 days. On Monday morning, T. ended the protest. Wolfram Jarosch, Maja T.'s father, and T.'s lawyer, Sven Richwin, confirmed the move to taz. Jarosch said it was Maja's own decision.

The reason for calling off the hunger strike was the recently significantly deteriorating state of health and the fear of permanent damage, Jarosch said. There is also hope that Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU), with the announced trip of representatives from his ministry to Hungary this week, will actually at least bring an end to Maja T.'s solitary confinement in Hungary. "We hope that something serious will finally happen," Jarosch told taz. "After Maja's illegal extradition to Hungary, the Foreign Office would be morally obligated to do so."

-Maja T. is accused of serious attacks on right-wing extremists in Budapest in February 2023, on the sidelines of the Europe-wide "Day of Honor" march. T. was arrested in Berlin in December 2023. Six months later, she was extradited to Hungary – illegal, as the Federal Constitutional Court later ruled. Since then, Maja T. has been held in solitary confinement in Hungary, and faces up to 24 years in prison in an ongoing trial in Budapest. At the beginning of June, Maja T. therefore began a hunger strike to demand better prison conditions, a fair trial, and her return to Germany.
Forced feeding threatened

-Due to her deteriorating health, Maja T. was recently transferred to a prison hospital on the Hungarian-Romanian border, where she was also placed in isolation. Her father, Wolfram Jarosch, was able to visit Maja T. there for the first time over the weekend and subsequently reported to the taz newspaper that Maja was "not feeling well." "Maja has lost a lot of weight, her cheeks are sunken, and the weight loss is clearly visible." Maja T. has since lost 14 kilograms, her liver and kidneys are damaged, and her blood counts are too low.

-Jarosch also stated that her heart rate had temporarily dropped to 30 beats per minute, and there was a risk of cardiac arrest. Hungarian doctors had recently suggested implanting a pacemaker or force-feeding Maja T.

-Sven Richwin, Maja T.'s lawyer, also told taz that Maja's condition had become "increasingly worrying in recent days." "Maja took advantage of perhaps the last window of opportunity in which a self-determined decision was still possible and chose life—also so that she could have a say in the fight for humane prison conditions and due process." Richwin said he was "very relieved and impressed by Maja's determination over the past few weeks."

-However, even ending a hunger strike still carries medical risks, emphasized Richwin and her father, Wolfram Jarosch. Maja T. must now slowly begin eating again to avoid the potentially life-threatening symptoms of refeeding syndrome.
Foreign Ministry delegation travels to Hungary

-Representatives of the Left Party, the Green Party, and finally the SPD have recently called for improved detention conditions for Maja T. and her return to Germany. Last week, the taz newspaper reported that a delegation from the German Foreign Office would travel to Hungary this week to address Maja T.'s case. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) also publicly confirmed this on Saturday. He stated that they would talk to the Hungarian government "to initially achieve improvements in Maja T.'s detention situation." Wadephul also emphasized, however, that Hungary had reaffirmed its interest in pursuing its own prosecution and that these were "extremely serious allegations" that would also lead to criminal proceedings in Germany.

-Father Wolfram Jarosch called on the German Foreign Office to achieve a concrete improvement in his child's situation during the trip to Hungary. "The Foreign Office must not return from Hungary empty-handed." The German government must "finally act" and "bring Maja back to Germany – or at least ensure an end to her solitary confinement in Hungary."

-It's still unclear who exactly will travel to Hungary and what exactly will be negotiated, Jarosch said. "But I very much hope that something concrete will finally happen. That the violation of the law, which has lasted for over a year for Maja, will finally be brought to an end." Maja needs an end to solitary confinement and at least a transfer to house arrest in Hungary.

-Left Party MEP Martin Schirdewan also called on Monday for Maja T.'s "immediate" return to Germany. "The lukewarm words of the Foreign Office are not enough. Maja T. must receive justice as quickly as possible. And that means reversing the illegal extradition." It remains "inexplicable" that Foreign Minister Wadephul has so far taken little action to correct the existing injustice.
Further charges in Germany

-Maja T. is said to belong to a group of militant anti-fascists who last lived in Saxony and Thuringia. The Federal Prosecutor's Office recently filed charges before the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court against six other left-wing activists who are also accused of the Budapest attacks and who had been in hiding for two years. Other left-wing activists will soon have to answer in separate proceedings before the Dresden Higher Regional Court, also for these and other attacks. Another Budapest suspect, Hanna S., has been on trial in Munich since February."

in German below

https://taz.de/Nach-40-Tagen-Protest-in-Haft/!6100797/

He plans to travel to Hungary next week to negotiate better prison conditions for Maja.

-Foreign Minister Wadephul told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND): "We are in talks with the Hungarian government to initially achieve improvements in Maja T.'s detention situation." He added: "We will make further representations to Hungary on this matter next week." They want to achieve improvements in Maja's detention. "We are continuing our intensive efforts."

However, Hungary has so far reaffirmed its interest in pursuing its own criminal prosecution, and Maja is facing serious allegations. "Maja T. would therefore also have to expect criminal proceedings in Germany." Regarding the illegal extradition, he explains: "The extradition took place at a time when the Constitutional Court's decision had not yet been served."

-But that's not enough: The organizers of the action camp emphasize that the pressure must be urgently increased to achieve not only minimal improvements in Maja's detention, but also her return to Germany. According to a press release, various creative actions are planned at the protest camp to force political decision-makers to act.

>“Save Maja Action Camp” – Building pressure to bring Maja back

-Antifascist Maja's health has deteriorated rapidly. For this reason, the "Save Maja Action Camp" has been formed in front of the Federal Foreign Office to continue exerting pressure on the German government.

>Action camp starts in Berlin

Due to this acute emergency, the Save Maja Action Camp was formed. Its goal is to exert massive political pressure on the German government and decision-makers to bring Maja back to Germany and thus save the life of this anti-fascist activist.

The camp begins on Sunday, July 13, in Berlin with a demonstration at noon from Alexanderplatz to the Foreign Office. The camp will then open at 1 p.m.

In its press release, the action camp formulated three central demands:

Bring Maja back to Germany!
Freedom for Maja! The German woman is on hunger strike in protest against her prison conditions. The German Foreign Office has now issued a statement.

The German government has expressed concern about the health of Maja T., a person imprisoned in Hungary. "The concern is, of course, great," said a spokeswoman for the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. The German government is in "close contact" with the relatives, and the German Embassy in Budapest has been able to speak with Maja T. The conversation took place in a hospital where Maja T. is being treated for her health condition.

The non-binary German person Maja T. was arrested in Berlin in December 2023. The reason was the accusation by the Hungarian authorities that Maja T., together with other anti-fascist activists, had attacked members of the right-wing extremist scene in Budapest in February 2023. In June 2024, she was extradited to Hungary – despite ongoing expedited proceedings before the Federal Constitutional Court, which then issued an interim injunction prohibiting extradition immediately after her transfer.

-In light of Maja T.'s deteriorating health, the SPD in the Bundestag is calling for Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to intervene. "Mr. Wadephul must bring Maja T. back home," said Falko Droßmann, the SPD parliamentary group's queer policy spokesperson, to the "taz" newspaper. A solidarity committee and the father reported that Maja T. – who has been on hunger strike for about four weeks – has already lost 14 kilograms.

With her hunger strike, Maja T. is seeking better prison conditions and a return to Germany. Hungarian doctors recently threatened to force-feed her, even though Maja T. has rejected this in her advance directive.

Due to her significantly reduced heart rate, doctors are also considering implanting a pacemaker. Alternatively, the 24-year-old could be transferred to a civilian hospital. Unlike in the prison clinic, continuous ECG monitoring would be possible there – but according to her family, T. would be confined to a bed around the clock. Maja T.'s father opposes both options.

In German below

Source: ntv.de, jpe/AFP/dpa

https://www.n-tv.de/politik/Bundesregierung-in-Sorge-um-inhaftierte-Maja-T-article25895409.html

Doctors apparently want to intervene because T. is at risk of organ damage.

-Maja T., a non-binary person accused in Hungary, is to have a pacemaker implanted, according to reports from Maja T.'s circle. According to reports, doctors have determined that T.'s heart rate has temporarily dropped to 30. The defendant has been on hunger strike for more than a month to protest "inhumane treatment in pre-trial detention" and is demanding her transfer to Germany.
T. is part of a group of activists from Germany and Italy who allegedly beat Hungarian neo-Nazis with sticks in 2023, according to the Hungarian public prosecutor's office. T. did not comment on the specific allegations, but stated at the start of the trial that the indictment documents she had received contained "not a single word" "that outlines my life, my personality, and is based on facts." Maja T. refused to plead guilty.

Just a few days ago, the defendant was taken to a prison hospital in southeastern Hungary because her health was deteriorating. Now, according to sources close to Maja T., doctors there are demanding a transfer to a civilian hospital. Only there is a 24-hour electrocardiogram (ECG) possible. This is to examine the heart, because otherwise there is a risk of organ damage. The transfer to a civilian hospital would also mean that the inmate would have to be confined to bed, it is feared.
Maja T.'s father, Wolfram Jarosch, told SPIEGEL: "Maja must not be tied to the bed. That would be a cruel and unnecessary coercive measure." Furthermore, "under no circumstances should a pacemaker be implanted against T.'s will." This would not help either, as the low heart rate is a result of the hunger strike.

According to the Hungarian public prosecutor's office, T. faces up to 24 years in prison. The transfer of the detainees from Germany to Hungary in the summer of 2024 was subsequently declared unlawful by the Federal Constitutional Court. There is repeated criticism from the EU that Hungary disregards the principles of the rule of law. This week, the EU Commission stated in its new Rule of Law Report that Hungary is making no progress in addressing deficiencies in the rule of law.
Politicians for extradition to Germany
Prominent politicians such as Green Party MP Katrin Göring-Eckardt and EU Left Party leader Martin Schirdewan are therefore demanding that T. be extradited back to Germany for a fair trial. "The Foreign Office must urgently bring an end to the solitary confinement and ensure Maja's return to Germany," Jarosch demands again.
In response to a written question from Green Party member of the Bundestag Helge Limburg, the German government recently stated: "The case of Maja T. was raised at a high level with the Hungarian government."
Right-wing Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had called Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the case of an Italian woman accused in the same case. This is the 32nd day of the hunger strike. According to supporters, eye movement disorders have now been observed, suggesting that she has entered the "ocular phase" of the hunger strike (more details on the hunger phases can be found in our post from June 25). This suggests that Maja has reached an acutely life-threatening condition.

According to reports, doctors at the Hungarian prison hospital stated that they do not feel bound by Maja's advance directive, which explicitly excludes forced feeding. We would like to put this into context below:

Force-feeding occurs repeatedly around the world, especially among prisoners on hunger strike. This deprives prisoners, who already have very limited options for protest, of their last means of protest, for example, against prison conditions, and of control over their own bodies.

Medicine worldwide has a clear principle of decision-making called "informed consent." Doctors do not make the decision themselves; instead, they inform their patients about all the options and risks so that they can make an informed decision about their own bodies. Of course, this has its limits, for example when a person is unconscious. In this case, the person's presumed wishes must be followed. Living wills, authorized representatives, and relatives can all help determine this. There are also exceptions for situations in which patients are no longer able to make decisions for themselves due to their cognitive state, or where there are other risks, such as mental illness or in the case of children. A further limitation is that, of course, no doctor is forced to carry out medically pointless measures just because a patient absolutely wishes it.

This principle must also be fully applied during a hunger strike, so that the person on hunger strike can make their own decisions about their body. In order to ensure that legally sound documentation of the hunger striker's wishes is available in all eventualities, we recommend, if possible, contacting medical professionals who are in solidarity and who can supervise the hunger strike as early as possible.

Forced treatment, especially forced feeding, of hunger strikers is thus fundamentally contrary to the basic principle of "informed consent" and contradicts the rules of medical practice. The fact that it continues to occur with medical involvement to this day has prompted the World Medical Association (WMA) to issue several clear statements prohibiting all doctors worldwide from forcing forced treatment of hunger strikers. After the Tokyo Declaration of 1975 prohibited doctors from any involvement in torture and humiliation, which the WMA clearly includes forced feeding, the Malta Declaration of 1991 established detailed regulations for the medical treatment of hunger strikers, which have been repeatedly revised and tightened due to persistent, prohibited forced feeding. The current version states, among other things:
“All kinds of interventions for enteral or parenteral feeding against the will of the mentally competent hunger striker are “to be considered as “forced feeding”. Forced feeding is never ethically acceptable. Even if intended to benefit, feeding accompanied by threats, coercion, force or use of physical restraints is a form of inhuman and degrading treatment. Equally unacceptable is the forced feeding of some detainees in order to intimidate or coerce other hunger strikers to stop fasting.”

The World Medical Association consists of 115 professional associations of physicians around the world. Its declarations are binding for its members and the physicians in their respective countries. For Germany, the German Medical Association is a member of the WMA, as is the Hungarian Medical Association (Magyar Orvosi Kamara). However, unlike the German Medical Association, the latter has limited powers and influence. Doctors' self-government with disciplinary powers, as exists in Germany, does not exist in Hungary. This makes it easier for authorities in Hungary to influence medical decisions and thus enforce treatments that contradict medical practice and human rights. That things can be done differently is demonstrated by a 2010 case in which a court in Switzerland ordered forced feeding during a hunger strike. At the time, the doctors in charge refused to carry out the forced feeding, citing the regulations of the Swiss medical profession, which are based on the Malta Declaration.

in German below

https://demosanitaeter.com/zwangsbehandlung-bei-einem-hungerstreik/

They would act if Maja's condition worsened, regardless of Maja's stated wishes.

This attitude clearly contradicts the ethical guidelines clearly formulated by the World Medical Association in the Malta Declaration. Furthermore, forced treatment against a patient's will would constitute a criminal offense in Germany.

We therefore call again and with great urgency:

Maja must be able to speak confidentially, i.e., face-to-face, with an independent doctor in German or with the assistance of an interpreter, and be examined by them. This is important so that Maja can correctly understand and classify the findings.
The Foreign Office must intervene immediately, not only through the embassy but also at the highest level.

A tragedy is looming that can still be prevented. This doesn't require special rights or privileges, but rather adherence to internationally valid rules, formally signed by Hungary, as well as respect for fundamental and human rights. And it needs a foreign minister who will finally actively defend the constitutional principles of Germany and Europe, and thus Maja's dignity.

Solidarity Committee for Maja's Hunger Strike

Jena, July 5, 2025

in German below

https://www.basc.news/ungarische-gefaengnisaerzte-stellen-zwangsbehandlung-in-den-raum-majas-zustand-verschlechtert-sich/
