Oblomov<p>I was running out of space on my home server's storage, so I purchased two new larger hard disks which I'm going to replace the previous ones with. These are not boot disks, and I'm thinking of trying <a href="https://sociale.network/tags/ZFS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ZFS</span></a> on them, with a simple 1+1 mirror. I've read up some introductory guides, so I more or less have an idea about what I'm supposed to do, but are there any caveats that the Fediverse would like to share before I dive in?</p><p><a href="https://sociale.network/tags/askFedi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>askFedi</span></a> <a href="https://sociale.network/tags/selfHosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfHosting</span></a> <a href="https://sociale.network/tags/homeServer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>homeServer</span></a></p>
The IT Blog<p><strong>How to Use a Lenovo ThinkCentre M910q as a Powerful Home Server</strong></p><p>As an IT enthusiast, I’ve long been (and still are!) a fan of the <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.locked.de/tag/raspberrypi/" target="_blank">#RaspberryPi</a> mini computers. My main Pi already runs multiple services like <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.locked.de/tag/pihole/" target="_blank">#PiHole</a>, <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.locked.de/tag/navidrome/" target="_blank">#Navidrome</a> and <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://www.locked.de/tag/jellyfin/" target="_blank">#Jellyfin</a> – which often pushes it near its limits. Well, recently I found myself wanting to add even more services to my local network. CryptGoat<p>Looking for a dedicated GPU for <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/transcoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>transcoding</span></a> purposes turned out to be the worst rabbit hole.🙈 </p><p>So, I'm using a AMD Ryzen 4600G in my homelab featuring <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/ProxmoxVE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ProxmoxVE</span></a>. The hardware transcoding capabilities of AMD hardware is very much behind Nvidia and <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/Intel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Intel</span></a>, even though it isn't half as bad as expected. Anyway, the best transcoding hardware (best quality at same size/profile) are Intel devices featuring <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/QuickSync" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>QuickSync</span></a>. Setting up another dedicated transcoding device (featuing a low power Intel APU such as the <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/N100" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>N100</span></a>) device doesn't seem to make much sense for me. There are several Intel Arc GPUs on the market and they all have pretty much the same transcoding capabilities, so I'd like to get the Intel GPU featuring the lowest power draw, especially when idling.
