Here is a new #Introduction post following my migration to mastodon.gamedev.place.

I'm a hobby game dev, musician, artist, and a professional research scientist in molecular biology.

I have released a #Love2D game called Dicey Poker (downloaded 25 times over at ethinethin.itch.io/diceypoker). I am also working on a vintage computer simulator, heavily based on the PDP-8, the source code of which is on my github.

@lritter @jk It's always important to remember that AAA games are not "gaming".
It's one niche. The one with the biggest budget and the biggest marketing, because they are financial investments by rich people who care nothing about entertainment, but really not where most of the interesting new and creative developments happen.

Just like Hollywood isn't cinema.

I think my aversion to do more practice with creating assets for my game project comes mostly from not wanting to deal with sourcing and editing textures. But the demo level for Cogito does look pretty nice even without any textures. Starting with something like that with the option to refine it later might help me.

But does anyone know examples of low-polygon/no-textures visual styles that aren't all happy little valleys with sunshine and puffy clouds? Something darker?

Can anyone recommend libraries of stock sound effects (free or cheap) for making games with a mid to late 90s aesthetic?

Anything with sounds that were used in popular or multiple games, and as such recognizable, would be especially interesting.

Big archives with a wide range of sounds to browse through quickly to start building a collection of favorites would be very useful to me.

"Finished" Projects

I can't say they are good, but I can say they are mine. I made them with my very own hands (and a lot of help from many MANY people)...

At the beginning of 2023 I had set out to make one game per month. I thought maybe I would give up mid-year with less than 3 projects completed.

I finished six.

I feel comfortable with that. I don't know if I can do 6 more next year, but I will certainly try.
