A Classical style tenement designed by Alexander B. McDonald for the City Improvement Trust and built on High Street in 1891. This is a beautiful blonde sandstone building, but it's easily overlooked due to the incongruous frontage of the ground floor commercial premises and the street furniture positioned in front of it.

I found this fantastic little ghost sign today at the entrance to a tenement close on High Street in Glasgow. The tenement was built in 1901, but the phone number (Bell 976) indicates the sign dates from sometime between 1936, when the Bell Telephone Exchange opened on nearby Ingram Street, and the 1960s, when the Bell prefix was phased out in favour of the numerical ones 552 and 553.

We already know that in the competition between the #highstreet & #onlineshopping, #businessrates are a key issue impacting on shops ability to remain viable... so the prospect of an inflation-linked rise in business rates next year is already leading to concerns about the future of many retailers (big & small)....

Some may see this as special pleading by #retail, but when hight street retailers are closing we are losing a vital social resource...
