Annie Hsh 👾🖖☕<p>With the most recent online trend of having AI generated images sort of resembling the art style of Studio Ghibli, nothing sums things up more than this quote by Hayao Miyazaki on similar technology from several years ago:</p><p>"I can't watch this stuff and find [it] interesting. Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is whatsoever. I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all."</p><p>Which also brings to mind this quote by Guillermo del Toro, said during a conversation with the British Film Institute, where he also, interestingly enough, references Miyazaki and his work later on:</p><p>“I saw a demo of AI and I thought oh that's what people think animation is, giving prompts and the computer does it. You know, but AI has demonstrated that it can do semi-compelling screensavers. That's essentially that. The value of art is not how much it costs and how little effort it requires, it’s how much would you risk to be in its presence. How much would people pay for those screensavers? Are they going to make them cry because they lost a son? A mother? Because they misspent their youth? Artemis<p>Found a fun little piece on the three-card tarot spread used in Nightmare Alley. This makes a very nice companion to the scene where it shows up. As the author mentions, it was nice to see a tarot reading depicted this way in a film. Artemis<p>I wasn't able to quite finish it yet, but I think Pinocchio might be my least favorite del Toro film.</p><p>I like some of it very much! But I dislike the songs.</p><p>I'm fond of musicals. I am less fond of movies that are not structured as musicals having characters burst into (non-diegetic) song. The songs don't do much or add much. Artemis<p>I just watched all the "making of" features of Hellboy 2, and I am obsessed with all of the beautiful creatures and effects.</p><p>I'm not saying I actually want this to happen (why not make new things?), but my God, del Toro could *totally* do a live action Spirited Away, and it would be *gorgeous*. The Troll Market scene in Hellboy proves it.
