randomwizard<p>In the mid 80s, TSR came out with a new version of Top Secret. The original game was set more in a cold war USA vs USSR kind of setting. The newer game leaned more into a James Bond fantastical kind of setting.</p><p>I played it a couple of times. I really liked the combat of the game. Each character had a paper doll with hit locations and hit boxes. Players would roll 2 ten sided dice to see if they hit. 2 ten siders can make 00-99. If you rolled under your skill rating, you would get a hit.</p><p>But what was cool was that the same roll also told you how much damage you did, and where you hit. If Suzie had a Melee score of 67, and she rolled 58. She would do 5 points of damage and hit location 8 (right let). If she rolled a 20, she would do 2 points of damage and hit location 0 (head). If she rolled 78, she missed.</p><p>I always wanted to try such a system in a medieval style rpg, but damage and body types are more varied. I did not relish the idea of making paper dolls for Dragons, Centaurs, and Mermaids.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/rpg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rpg</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/spy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>spy</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/osr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>osr</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/tsr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tsr</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/gametheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gametheory</span></a></p>
randomwizard<p>Recent discussions about hypothetical D&amp;D economies led me to look into Roman currency. Here is a great wikipedia image of the common currency in the 27 BC - 100 AD Roman era.</p><p>So instead of copper, silver, electrum gold (the D&amp;D standard), the early Roman Empire used various iterations of Bronze, Orichalcum, Silver, Billon, and Gold.</p><p>And today I learned Billon is the name for an alloy of silver and gold, or silver and copper, or silver and gold and copper, or basically any alloy of silver and some base metal.</p><p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_currency#Imperial_period:_27_BC_%E2%80%93_AD_476" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_cu</span><span class="invisible">rrency#Imperial_period:_27_BC_%E2%80%93_AD_476</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/dnd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dnd</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/rpg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rpg</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/osr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>osr</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/gametheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gametheory</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/worldbuilding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>worldbuilding</span></a></p>
randomwizard<p>So going by the rules as written in the DMG of 1st edition AD&amp;D, if you had some player, maybe new to the game, play their thief and get 1251 XP. You, as the DM, had to keep note of how well they played and assign them a score. Let us say they were just average because, hey, they are new. So that is a score of 3. That means they need to train for 3 weeks, and pay a total of 4500 gold pieces until they get to level 2. I have a hard time believing anyone played by that rule. I mean, I am sure someone will come out and say "Oh yeah, we totally did that." but it is just one example of a lot of weird rules in the books.</p><p>Editing to add... it is even more complicated than that. You assign them a score per adventure until the get enough XP. Then you total up your score and divide it by the number of adventures. Then if you have some left over percentage. Say 3.5 is the average. That .5 means half a week more of training.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/dnd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dnd</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/osr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>osr</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/rpg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rpg</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/adnd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>adnd</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/gametheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gametheory</span></a></p>

randomwizard<p>The debate between who invented Dungeons &amp; Dragons, Dave Arneson or Gary Gygax, goes back and forth without a definitive answer. One position I hear often is that it would not have been made if not for both of them, so they both deserve credit. Usually, they attribute that Arneson was not disciplined enough to get the rules together.</p><p>But, I think it is quite possible that one of Arneson's friends might have been able to put together the rules. It has to be remembered that Dave Megarry played with Arneson and had already put together the Dungeon Board Game before they even came down to explain what Arneson's new roleplaying game was to Gary Gygax.</p><p>I do not think it too far fetched to imagine Megarry cobbling together a ruleset. Imagine an alternate universe where D&amp;D used 2d6 and has its roots in the pre-TSR Dungeon! game.</p><p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_R._Megarry" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_R.</span><span class="invisible">_Megarry</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/dnd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dnd</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/osr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>osr</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/rpg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rpg</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/gametheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gametheory</span></a></p>
randomwizard<p>I recommend giving the old 1981 TSR Star Frontiers a try to anyone who wants to try something old school but a little bit different. The task resolution is roll under a percentage that is written down on the character sheet. It does not get much simpler than that. It streamlines a lot of player thinking process at the table concerning rolls (at least in my experience).</p><p>It has a skill system, but it is very basic and avoids all those useless decoration skills you get when you try to cover everything.</p><p>I think there is one area that most players want, that SF is lacking. Personal character advancement. I think D&amp;D advancement levels appeal to players in some innate way... The effect of you went up a level and gained 5 hit points and can hit better and gained a couple of spells, until you are super hero that can go toe to toe with a dragon.</p><p>SF is more granular and defeating a giant robot dragon usually requires buying expensive gear which I suspect is not quite as fulfilling in some innate way.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/rpg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rpg</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/scifi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>scifi</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/1980s" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>1980s</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/gametheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gametheory</span></a></p>

considerate<p>We're a little late to the game but my kid and I are getting into Magic the Gathering. I'm reading a book about the history of MTG in the midst of our deciphering the rules (over two hundred pages). I'm also interested in the complexity of the game, game theory, etc. We've played the Pokemon card game for years, but Magic I find more appealing and immersive. <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/magic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>magic</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/gametheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gametheory</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/pokemon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>pokemon</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/magicthegathering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>magicthegathering</span></a></p>
