Dear #gischat people. I'm looking for an open source solution for managing objects on a map. More precisely, we want to use it to manage a garden: planning layouts (at home, on a desktop machine), registering the trees we planted with their geolocation in a database (out in the field, on the phone). I'm happy to manage a server installation and do a minor amount of coding, but a smooth end user experience would be appreciated.

My current thinking is QGIS/QField/QFieldCloud. Is this a viable approach? Are there any preferable alternatives?

As some of you know my current fixed term contract as a research software engineer at the University of #Glasgow is coming to an end. So, I am looking for a new job either in or out of academia where I would get to do more programming than admin.

I have written open source geospatial software in academia and industry for the last 30 years. I'm good at debugging, teaching, mentoring but not meetings.

ESRI is my nightmare in job application.

I do not want to be in Windows.

If the point is developing scripts, tools or dashboards please let me use tools that were build to do that. I do not believe that reproducing a GIS GUI as a dashboard is good UI/UX. I want a correct IDE or a terminal, I do not need a mapping platform at the same time ...

Finally if you need a DB, I want postresql/postgis not a "geodatabase" but I guess now even ESRI is good at connecting to PG. #GISCHAT
