Pete Orrall<p>This is not how I was expecting my Sunday night to turn out. <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenBSD</span></a> 7.7 disc burned but refused to boot. My laptop was having issues reading the disc so I burned another copy. Same thing.... </p><p>So, what's next on the list to be installed? <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenIndiana" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenIndiana</span></a> - cool. Also haven't used this one in years. LiveCD boots into the <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/mate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mate</span></a> desktop just fine. It's missing some key drivers though. I will spend more time with it later. I just need a working laptop for now.</p><p>Let's go with <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/FreeBSD14" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreeBSD14</span></a>. Always a good choice and I just used this disc on another machine recently. But tonight the laptop is not recognizing it and the laptop just boots to the memtest. Hmmm... </p><p>OK, let's try the <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/openSUSE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>openSUSE</span></a> Leap 16 beta again. Same problem as before. It installs but the OS doesn't boot. I don't even get the "GRUB Booting..." message. Wonderful. </p><p>Last on the list is <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> 12. The installer is chugging along happily and I've just realized it's been several hours, I've forgotten to prep dinner, and I am starving.</p><p> Whoops!</p><p>It's now 21:41, I am mostly done with my coffee and about to crank on the grill. This laptop can wait.</p>

MarkD<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://gts.passthejoe.net/@steven" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>steven</span></a></span> The only problem I find is that the Raspberry PIs seem to trash the SD drives at a very high rate, regardless of which OS they're running, so if at all possible I move the OS off to a USB drive.</p><p>Once that's done, <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/FreeBSD14" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreeBSD14</span></a> is flawless.</p>
