Cara Bruar
To self publishers, please consider your readers when formatting. There should be white space on the page, not a wall of densely packed text with nowhere for the eye to start or pause. Also non self publishers of course.
I read samples before buying. Yesterday, did not buy an otherwise promising book for this reason.
#formatting #selfpublishing

Devin Prater :blind:
I was just thinking about the whole iOS 18 rumor that there will be word level effects in Messages. So, the accessibility for this could happen in a few ways that I can think of:

* VoiceOver uses the "attachment start" and "attachment end" sounds like in Mail for attachments on Mac.
* VoiceOver uses pitch or some other speech change to speak the words, each effect maybe having its own speech change.
* VoiceOver plays the effect's sound with each word spoken. This seems the most useful to me honestly.

But, if they do go with the speech changes, and they also have formatting like bold or italics, this could mark the time when VoiceOver can both show Braille, and speech, formatting. Already, in Notes and the Books app, VoiceOver is able to show formatting in Braille. So if an author uses italics to show that someone is thinking, or bold to show telepathy, or even more important, marks important words in a text book in bold! Very freaking important for homework! Braille readers can know that. So the next logical move is to add that to speech. So, iOS 18 might, just might, be the first mainstream OS with a screen reader to rival Emacspeak! The flexible voice rotor may allow us to configure how formatted text is output as well.

#iOS #VoiceOver #accessibility #blind #formatting #text #Apple

Delta Wye
I took some time to work out the exact #formatting that #Elasticsearch demands. If you think this might be useful, go ahead and boost. If you find any errors or would like to suggest additions, please also post a reply!

Hopefully this can help prevent a lot of frustration and trouble people might encounter and give them a better Mastodon experience!

(Updated to Revision 2)

Fonts.
My writing format looks nothing like the finished books. My writing font is Cambria, because I find it easy on the eye. With consistent use of Paragraph Styles, it’s easy to convert to Standard Manuscript Format or whatever when needed.
My paperback font, from the offerings at Atticus, is Cinzel.
