If you would like to hear an immigrant story that has some echoes of what is happening today in the USA, this is a 5min video created by my aunt, Mary Alemany-Galway (now passed) and Raphael Bendahan in Montreal in 2008.

It tells the story of my Spanish grandparents, a family friend, and their struggle with fascism and immigration to Canada.

The little boy in the pictures is my dad.

Visited Belchite. The town was the focus of fierce battles during the Spanish civil war, being captured by Republican forces as they sought to reconquer Aragon which had endorsed the coup d'etat of Franco.

The town, whilst heavily bombarded, did survive the war, many of the buildings in these images were still inhabited into the 1950s. But Franco wanted to make an example of the town, being one of few the Republicans captured after Nationalists had seized parts of the country. So a new town was built, soulless and suburban, and now home to a population a third the size of what it was before the civil war.

Franco insisted the old town be left to rot as a monument to what communism does, ironic of course as it is the clearest example of what fascism does.

Highly recommend visiting. The area was a front line in the civil war and therefore there is a lot of history around.

We had to make a one-page brochure about a Spanish speaking country plus a 2min video.
Nosotros debimos hacer una pagina en un folleto sobre un país de habla hispana.

I made a full, folding, brochure for Spain using mostly my own photos.
Hice un folleto completo para España haciendo principalmente mi propio fotos.

I'm now getting to the point where I can write down most of what I want to say, using mostly present and past tenses, without help. And then I check my work on a translator. Getting about 80% of it right 90% of the time lol.

Hay muchas cosas que me encantaban cuando tenía 12 años que han envejecido fatal, pero probablemente las que peor han envejecido de todas son los programas de “humor” de Alfonso Arús de los noventa, que YA ENTONCES sabía que eran zafios. Un pobre hombre convertido en blanco de burlas por #televisión📺. No sería el último. Descanse en paz.
