Kris\Slyka
ok, after a lot of fucking around and not nearly enough finding out I've finally got my DIY vidicon camera making images again! And they're… better?! They're definitely a lot sharper, but with increased bandwidth and sensitivity also comes increased noise!

Luckily the noise does not seem to stem from the preamp itself, which is nice, but only shows up once the high voltage is turned on, so it's probably mostly from the pretty noisy switching high voltage supply and the general… well… lack of proper grounding and power supply stability and shielding and all of that. There is more than a volt of ripple on the 300V rail which probably isn't good…

First image is straight from the camera, second one is the average of multiple exposures.

#Vidicam #electronics #Photography

Gus
Do I know any Australian #electronics nerds who could use a small IR reflow oven? Yours for cost of postage.

This is a Qinsi QS-5100, purchased in 2013. Used only a few times, and probably not for ten years. I just fired it up and the heating element, fan, etc. all seem to work as expected - but it could use a thorough test at minimum.

A lot was written about these ovens back in the day, particularly by Ian of Dangerous Prototypes.

If, like me, you only assemble boards in ones and twos for prototypes then TBH you probably don't need this (I use hot air and a preheater). If you do frequent small-ish assembly runs and can be bothered dialling the temp curves in (in theory a one-time process) then it may be of interest.
