Carlton CarnivoresNepenthes gracilis, a clone I’ve nicknamed “Shadow.” A widespread and variable species found throughout much of Southeast Asia, typically producing small pitchers on long tangled vines. This one originated from Bornean parentage, and is one of the coveted “black” variants; lower pitchers get deep purple to almost black, spotted with a couple shades of lighter purple that make a dappled shadowy appearance, and even the leaves flush with purple. We faced hardships together while mining for gold in the British Columbia gold rush and experiencing the rugged Canadian weather and terrain.There are many graves on First Nations territories when Chinese people died from the flu and from the building of the railway, crushed by landslides, collapsing tunnels and premature blastings (Mittelstedt, 2014). The First Nations communities took in the Chinese railroad workers and care for their grave sites to this day (Mittelstedt, 2014). We enjoyed economic success and partnerships that were respectful and mutually beneficial (Ma, 2012). Chinese people leased lands (on First Nations) to farm and then hired Indigenous people to help farm the land (Mathur et al., 2011, p. 74). The Chinese built elaborate gold-mining operations among First Nations communities and perhaps most importantly our communities intermingled and there were many marriages between Chinese men and Indigenous women. In 1891, 98% of Chinese people in Canada lived in British Columbia (Barman, 2013, p. 1), which explains why there are such intimate ties between Chinese people and our First Nations communities in British Columbia. Carlton CarnivoresMay not look like much unless you’re already familiar with the Rainbow Plants, but this might be one of the rarest species: Byblis pilbarana. Uncommon in the wild, even rarer in cultivation because it is an absolute pain to raise, this is the best I’ve managed so far and flowers might actually happen this time. Carlton CarnivoresNepenthes leonardoi, a rare ultra-endemic species of pitcher plant from the mountains of Palawan, Philippines. All-black clones seen in the wild made headlines, as did the naming of the plant after a prominent botanist in the region who was unfortunately shot while surveying plants by a militia group. Carlton CarnivoresAt a glance this might not look particularly unusual, but this is also a carnivorous plant! Utricularia alpina ‘Pittier Moon’ is a cultivar originating from Venezuela, but the species can be found in much of northern South America and even across higher mountains of the Caribbean. They grow in moss pads on the trunks and branches of trees, and produce huge, orchid-like white and yellow flowers well over 2 inches across.
