FKA ZOG<p><a href="https://jauntygoat.net/tags/PROXMOX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PROXMOX</span></a> VE first impressions.</p><p>My first impressions of PROXMOX VE, coming from a Linux and <a href="https://jauntygoat.net/tags/VMWARE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VMWARE</span></a> <a href="https://jauntygoat.net/tags/ESXI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ESXI</span></a> background.</p><p>I have been checking this out as VMware/ESXI/Vsphere has jumped the shark pretty much, post Broadcom takeover.</p><p>I set up a two node cluster using some old spare Dell and HP servers.<br>A few minor rough edges here and there, but nothing I didn't overcome with a few forum posts found via search engine.</p><p>The clustering and live migration I got working quickly and fairly well.</p><p>The import of VMWARE ESXI guests works surprisingly well - this is the "killer app" I wanted to check out, it's not seamless, but there is mostly a bit of messing around with boot devices to get the VMs running, generally a good experience.</p><p>Live migrate of running VMs between nodes with different, direct attached storage works well. Very happy with this.</p><p>I'm sort of stumped non live (e.g for shut down VMs) migration does not work as well for some strange reason you can change the target storage if the VM is running when you migrate - but you cannot if it is shut down. Surely the shut down VM should be the the easier thing to move? Not a show stopper as I guess the solution is to just turn the VM on, but this seems very strange to me coming from Vmware/Vsphere.</p><p>So in conclusion - generally a very positive experience - with a great pricing structure compared to VMWARE/ESXI - with a few strange little foibles and rough edges that I can get the hang of now I am aware.</p>

Linh Pham<p>It's nice that Proxmox is providing a tool to help people migrate off of VMware ESXi. Eric Capuano<p>In all my years installing ESXi, I never encountered this particular issue… A Skull Canyon NUC with 32GB of RAM ran out of resources will simply loading the ESXi installer…. wtf right?</p><p>Turns out, it’s a combination of issues between latest ESXi requiring UEFI/Secure Boot and also a limitation on just the Skull Canyons requiring temporarily disabling the onboard Thunderbolt device… who knew?</p><p><a href="https://www.virten.net/2016/05/esxi-installation-on-nuc6i7kyk-fails-with-fatal-error-10-out-of-resources/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">This blog</a> saved my ass tonight.
