"The problem is that the driving force behind the #datacenter boom isn't the #AI researchers, it is the #realestate people."

"ChatGPT came out in 2022, and the Chinese government declared AI infrastructure a national priority. Over 500 new data centres were announced in 2023 and 2024. Private investors went all-in.

Demand for the #datacentres turns out not to be there. Around 80% are not actually in use. [MIT Technology Review]"

Data centres could use double the electricity, an estimated 945TWh, by 2030. This is driven by AI tools.

“He (#PeterDutton) cites #DataCentres in the US where those #tech companies are having conversations with nuclear power providers:

The beauty of an #investment like #nuclear into the #Hunter region for example is you can attract the data centres which is exactly what is happening in the US. #Apple and #Oracle and #Microsoft, or these #companies are willing to spend tens of billions of dollars but they are only having conversations with #NuclearPower providers.”

#Straya gov cant #science or #compute, the LNP are garbage at business. Nuclear generation is #toxic. #Multinationals avoid tax.

#DataCentres ... in ... SPAAAAAACE!!!!! is the most ridiculous news story so far this year. Even more ridiculous then #Trumponomics or #MichaelFabricant's glorious hair. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cjewvp If you need so much computering that you can't just use a small modern computer then you're going to need cooling for that. Cooling takes about 45% of the power budget for a DC on Earth, and is MUCH HARDER in a vacuum where you can't use the atmosphere or a river as a heat sink.

BBC NewsThe plans to put data centres into orbit and on the moonProponents say space-based data centres will be more secure, but sceptics say big hurdles remain.

Once again it occurs to me that hyperscaling of datacentres is exactly the wrong approach to hosting online services. Not just from an economic justice and environmental POV, but even from a business POV.

Q. Corporate welfare or sensible national security move?

Data centres in the UK are about to be designated 'critical infrastructure' enabling them to access state-aid & support on security measures....

Hmmm... and this just as Amazon decides to invest in building such infrastructure in the UK.... call, me cynical, but you cannot help but wonder whether this is a form of (undercover) state-aid offered to Amazon to sweeten the investment deal?

Ireland’s datacentres overtake electricity use of all urban homes combined

Ireland’s energy-hungry #datacentres 💥consumed more electricity last year than all of its urban homes combined, 💥according to official figures.

The country’s growing fleet of datacentres used 21% of its electricity, an increase of a fifth on 2022, according to the Central Statistics Office.

It was the first year that datacentres supporting the Irish tech hub surpassed the electricity used by homes in its towns and cities, which consumed 18% of the grid’s total power last year.

Experts have raised concerns that ⭐️the sudden surge in power demand driven by datacentres could derail climate targets in Ireland and across Europe.⭐
