petersuber<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://h4.io/@joshisanonymous" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>joshisanonymous</span></a></span> <br>Bracketing the problem of deciding which journals are "prominent", we have a good answer from the Directory of Open Access Journals (<a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/DOAJ" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DOAJ</span></a>, <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://masto.ai/@DOAJ" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>DOAJ</span></a></span>). As of today, it lists 21,452 <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/OpenAccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenAccess</span></a> journals, of which 13,712 are <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/DiamondOA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DiamondOA</span></a> or charge no <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/APCs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>APCs</span></a>. Hence. 63.9% (≈ 64%) of DOAJ-listed journals charge no APCs.</p>

Josir Gomes<p>Probably there are much more Diamond Journals in the world than the number we imagine.</p><p>The bureaucracy involved in adding a journal to the DOAJ is so great that many publishers probably give up on including their journals. We heard of publishers and editors who didn’t want to submit a journal application until their journal was compliant for the Seal. Furthermore, we had unintentionally created a journal ranking system, which goes against our mission of giving equal visibility to all journals regardless of discipline, geography and language. Over time, due to the nature of the criteria, it became clear the Seal was easier to achieve for better-resourced journals…[Our] survey showed that the community associates the Seal with high editorial quality and prestige and some even use the Seal as a yardstick of whether they should access or recommend the journal or not."</p><p>Here's the current page on the DOAJ Seal.<br><a href="https://doaj.org/apply/seal/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">doaj.org/apply/seal/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>PS: I welcomed the introduction of the Seal in 2014 and accept its retirement. See this thread for more detail, including the fact that most journals missing from <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/DOAJ" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DOAJ</span></a> (not counting low-quality journals deliberately excluded) are <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/DiamondOA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DiamondOA</span></a> and not published in English (<a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/MultilingualResearch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MultilingualResearch</span></a>). <br><a href="https://fediscience.org/@petersuber/109513747735792962" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">fediscience.org/@petersuber/10</span><span class="invisible">9513747735792962</span></a></p><p>DOAJ knows this and wants to be more comprehensive. But many journals, esp in these two categories, can't afford the enhancements needed to qualify for DOAJ.</p>

petersuber<p>As of today the Directory of Open Access Journals (<a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/DOAJ" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DOAJ</span></a>) lists 18,495 peer-reviewed <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/openaccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>openaccess</span></a> journals. </p><p>12,756 (69%) charge no <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/APCs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>APCs</span></a>. </p><p>This has been the pattern for &gt;15 years. About 70% of OA journals are no-APC or no-fee (also called <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/diamond" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diamond</span></a>) OA journals. </p><p>Thanks to a UI enhancement earlier this year, both numbers are displayed on the DOAJ front page. It's easy to get the latest numbers. It's easy to correct those who assert or assume that all or most OA journals charge APCs.</p>
