Are we mostly rational or mostly irrational?

Western #scholarship conceived of #human #psychology as peak #rationality until 20th century #cognitivePsychology challenged this optimism.

Now David Thorstad provides 3 arguments for a middle way — the “reason-responsive consequentialist view of rational inquiry” — in his #openAccess book, Inquiry under bounds (#OxfordUniversityPress 2024).

My paper on adaptation after-effects in autistic and non-autistic teenagers is out in Autism Research! 🎉

"Autistic and nonautistic adolescents do not differ in adaptation to gaze direction"

These autistic teens show a large adaptation after-effect behaviourally, though we don't see the after-effects in EEG, and we try to interpret this in light of Predictive Processing accounts of autism.

I've been really confused looking at data that seem (to my eye) super similar to data we've collected in many previous experiments but statistically didn't replicate. I've been digging through my code trying to figure out if I've made a mistake.

Looks like there are maybe just some participants who are mashing buttons on Prolific? A small group with false alarm rates orders of magnitude more than previous experiments. Anyone else having issues?

@clarepress and I are excited to share this #preprint about the history of #cognitivePsychology and #neuroscience research on how expectations influence #perception

We talk about a handful of the technological and theoretical advances that have enabled discoveries that could not have happened previously, and about the fact that technological and theoretical advances scaffold each other in a virtuous cycle.

We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Just woke up from my first ever conference nightmare. Couldn't find my room, had to wear mismatched socks, had to leave my kid unattended, lost my glove, my session was in a different day than I thought, arrived too late to it, moderator was giving me the evil eye, and my poster had printed wrong so it was an A4 size with tiny tiny letters and figures just at the top. BUT the poster format was kind of brilliant. The poster was attached to a stick and then all presenters walked around, waving their poster around like a flag. Much more effective in attracting attention I am sure. We should change this. #Petition #Posters #CognitiveScience #Neuroscience #VisionScience #CognitivePsychology #Conferences #VSS2023 #ECVP2023

Wow. In 24 hours, we have gone from zero to 4.4K followers, that‘s crazy. Thank you for a warm welcome and excellent tips. I gave up on replying to all of you after someone pointed out that I was spamming thousands of people – sorry! Also, please do not read too much into it if we do not respond or take a long time responding, we are a busy bunch and may simply sometimes miss your post or messages. Mastodon allows long posts so I am taking advantage of that, so here are a few things that you may – or may not – want to know.

—Who are we?—

Research in the Icelandic Vision Lab (visionlab.is) focuses on all things visual, with a major emphasis on higher-level or “cognitive” aspects of visual perception. It is co-run by five Principal Investigators: Árni Gunnar Ásgeirsson, Sabrina Hansmann-Roth, Árni Kristjánsson, Inga María Ólafsdóttir, and Heida Maria Sigurdardottir. Here on Mastodon, you will most likely be interacting with me – Heida – but other PIs and potentially other lab members (visionlab.is/people) may occasionally also post here as this is a joint account. If our posts are stupid and/or annoying, I will however almost surely be responsible!

—What do we do?—

Current and/or past research at IVL has looked at several visual processes, including #VisualAttention , #EyeMovements , #ObjectPerception , #FacePerception , #VisualMemory , #VisualStatistics , and the role of #Experience / #Learning effects in #VisualPerception . Some of our work concerns the basic properties of the workings of the typical adult #VisualSystem . We have also studied the perceptual capabilities of several unique populations, including children, synesthetes, professional athletes, people with anxiety disorders, blind people, and dyslexic readers. We focus on #BehavioralMethods but also make use of other techniques including #Electrophysiology , #EyeTracking , and #DeepNeuralNetworks

—Why are we here?—

We are mostly here to interact with other researchers in our field, including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and principal investigators. This means that our activity on Mastodon may sometimes be quite niche. This can include boosting posts from others on research papers, conferences, or work opportunities in specialized fields, partaking in discussions on debates in our field, data analysis, or the scientific review process. Science communication and outreach are hugely important, but this account is not about that as such. So we take no offence if that means that you will unfollow us, that is perfectly alright :)

—But will there still sometimes be stupid memes as promised?—

Yes. They may or may not be funny, but they will be stupid.

Brilliant piece by Liam Bright summarises the pessimistic cross-disciplinary zeitgeist which portrays people as “ignorant little wretches, prone to error and delusion.”

He provides the alternative view that “our rational capacities are frequently well deployed [and] have delivered for us a rich and varied knowledge of our social and natural environment.”

#introduction

Hi everyone! I'm a #postdoc in #cognitivePsychology . I research what happens when we get unexpected sensory input, and how we decide when we should learn from that unexpected input, and when we should disregard it because it's unlikely to be informative.

My PhD tested how #actuallyAutistic people may differ from non-autistic people when they get unexpected sensory input.

I'm also interested in inclusivity, mental health, space & art and will sometimes boost these topics.

#Introduction:

I'm a researcher and professor in the overlap of #CognitivePsychology and #BehaviouralScience; based at City, University of London.

I’m interested in the processes and representations underlying decisions, and policy implications thereof. Expert contributor to the #FairnessFoundation, #Guardian masterclass giver, former #BBC scientific advisor. More teaching than researching right now but love both.

Other interests in music, playwriting, coding, tech, beer.

#introduction Please feel free to say hi!

I work at the intersection of #business #technical and #strategy for #SaaS transformation in the domain of #cad #cae #plm and other #engineering #software from #Huntsville #Alabama

I previously did #cognitivepsychology and #softwarequality research

I follow #HailState college sports, #everton #cowboys and #braves

I also like #camping and #minecraft, among more geeky hobbies like running a #Linux #desktop

And I live with mild #spasticdiplegia too!
