Nick<p>The thing with somewhere like <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Cirencester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cirencester</span></a> is that it is superficially an unusually pretty English market town dating back to the Romans. But when you look at why it’s full of pretty buildings and private parks from the 18th and 19th centuries, you realise the truth is very, very ugly indeed.</p><p>The <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Tory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tory</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Bathurst" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bathurst</span></a> family are still the literal lords of the manor, thanks to money from <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a>. The window is a later addition to a 19th century Cotswold stone house.</p><p>This house is on Cecily Hill in <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Cirencester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cirencester</span></a>, a pretty, largely 19th century street, and I’ve always noticed and liked the carving.</p><p>Cecily Hill was named after St Cecilia’s church, now gone and thus breaking my heart, shaking my confidence daily.
