Sean Fenian<p><span>I am so freaking tired of stupid </span><a href="https://plasmatrap.com/tags/CAPTCHAs" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CAPTCHAs</a><span>.<br><br>It's not even as though they serve any real purpose any more. Detailed academic studies have confirmed that </span><b><span>bots are now better than humans</span></b><span> at solving </span><b><span>ALL</span></b><span> types of CAPTCHAs that they tested. They are both faster, and more accurate. In fact, the most recent studies found that </span><a href="https://plasmatrap.com/tags/bots" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bots</a><span> are </span><b><span>at least</span></b><span> as accurate on the CAPTCHA types that bots are </span><b><span>worst</span></b><span> at, as </span><a href="https://plasmatrap.com/tags/humans" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#humans</a><span> are on the types that they are </span><b><span>best</span></b><span> at. AND the bots are FASTER.<br><br>Now if you think about this for a little bit, because the number of attempts by bots can </span><i><span>probably</span></i><span> still be presumed to be small relative to the number of attempts by humans, this does </span><i><span>not</span></i><span> mean — YET — that if you </span><b><span>PASS</span></b><span> a CAPTCHA you are more likely to be a bot.<br><br>However, it </span><b><span>DOES</span></b><span> mean that if you </span><b><span>FAIL</span></b><span> a CAPTCHA, </span><b><span>it is more likely that you are a human than a bot.</span></b></p>

Cory Doctorow<p>Today, there's a cool remote attestation technology called "<a href="https://mamot.fr/tags/PrivacyPass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PrivacyPass</span></a>" that replaces <a href="https://mamot.fr/tags/CAPTCHAs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CAPTCHAs</span></a> by having you prove to your own device that you are a human. When a server wants to make sure you're a person, it sends a random number to your device, which signs that number along with its promise that it is acting on behalf of a human being, and sends it back. CAPTCHAs are all kinds of bad - bad for accessibility and privacy - and this is really great.</p><p>49/</p>
