I've been binging kid's lit aka YA books. I did a very quick skim of C S Lewis' Lion Witch & Wardrobe and you know what I loved? At the end they *tell* the adults about it (instead of worrying about keeping it secret!) and the Responsible Adult's non-plussed reaction is "weird shit happens around here all the time."

"One reason why many people find Creative Evolution so attractive is that it gives one much of the emotional comfort of believing in God and none of the less pleasant consequences. When you are feeling fit and the sun is shining and you do not want to believe that the whole universe is a mere mechanical dance of atoms, it is nice to be able to think of this great mysterious Force rolling on through the centuries and carrying you on its crest. If, on the other hand, you want to do something rather shabby, the Life-Force, being only a blind force, with no morals and no mind, will never interfere with you like that troublesome God we learned about when we were children. The Life-Force is a sort of tame God. You can switch it on when you want, but it will not bother you. All the thrills of religion and none of the cost. Is the Life-Force the greatest achievement of wishful thinking the world has yet seen?" - CS Lewis, Mere Christianity

Here’s a question for fellow Narnia fans.

What do you think happened to the magical fruit tree that appeared in The Magicians Nephew after Digory buried the last piece of toffee in the soil?

I was so disappointed that none of the other books in this series ever talked about that delicious, toffee-like fruit again. I wanted someone to find it or at least mention that it exists!

Here’s a cute story for all of you. My grandparents made tapes of all four of the Chronicles of Narnia films that were made in the 1980s by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

I didn’t realize the last three books were never made into films, so after finishing The Silver Chair I quietly scoured through all of my grandparents’ VHS tapes to find The Horse and His Boy, The Magician’s Nephew, and The Last Battle.

It took me a while to realize they didn’t exist.

I have some people whom I have never met in person but consider my "indirect mentors" because I've learned a lot from their writings and life example. I've listed some of my indirect mentors below, but would love to learn about yours in replies!

This is a thread that I'll add to, but we'll start with ...

C.S. Lewis
He was a tremendous scholar with an extraordinary ability to translate ancient truths from Christian history and thought into prose that we moderns can understand. He was not narrow, but focused on things that all Christians at all times agreed upon. His fiction showed me how to use imagination to better understand spiritual reality. I learned a lot about his life outside of his writings as well and saw a humble and faithful man who gave a substantial portion of his earnings to those in need and cared well for people in his life at great personal cost. He was a rigorous thinker who submitted himself to logic. His moral argument for the existence of God and then explanation of how God revealed himself in Mere Christianity was masterful. He showed me how good communication and thought can make a huge impact, but only when it is an outgrowth of a true conversion. One of his friends called Lewis, "The most thoroughly converted man I ever met." I owe Jack (his nickname) a great deal.
