SeaFury 🦜🍉<p>Heading to Hobart next week for the start of my PassivHaus incubator. Food recommendations please!!!! <a href="https://aus.social/tags/BuildingScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BuildingScience</span></a></p>
SeaFury 🦜🍉<p>OMG my consulting entity is up with these others! I started Snug House in 2015 to help Tasmanian homes become more energy effficent. In recent years, it's become less active with my PhD. But recentlyI have had more interest. Especially with the blower door testing and my expertise around climate (from my PhD). Good to see recognition. I am start to see that perhaps I will not be going into academia, rather I might be doing industry funded research and practice. <a href="https://aus.social/tags/BuildingScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BuildingScience</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/PhDLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PhDLife</span></a></p>
SeaFury 🦜🍉<p>Joined a group of building scientists this morning. We investigated a grand old Launceston building. It felt like we were paranormal investigators. Three thermal cameras (we had one each!!!) - I did a blower door test. <a href="https://aus.social/tags/buildingScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>buildingScience</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a></p>
SeaFury 🦜🍉<p>I did not go to sleep early. I sat up and wrote my presentation for the Aust Institute of Architects. I'll be talking about what's up with current Australian air tightness regs and what we are seeing on the ground - What's good enough and what construction strategies we need to pay attention to to get there. Free lunch time 30 minute session on Thursday 3rd July. Register here if you want to go <a href="https://aus.social/tags/buildingScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>buildingScience</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://members.architecture.com.au/EventDetail?EventKey=TAS250703" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">members.architecture.com.au/Ev</span><span class="invisible">entDetail?EventKey=TAS250703</span></a></p>
SeaFury 🦜🍉<p>I'll be giving a talk to the Australian Institute of Architects sustainability committee on 3 July. Register here if you want to go! As far as I know, it's free - and a very short talk, 15 mins plus Q&amp;A. I'll be having a chat about "good enough" air tightness in residential buildings <a href="https://aus.social/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/buildingScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>buildingScience</span></a> <a href="https://members.architecture.com.au/EventDetail?EventKey=TAS250703" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">members.architecture.com.au/Ev</span><span class="invisible">entDetail?EventKey=TAS250703</span></a></p>
SeaFury 🦜🍉<p>Have been booked for another talk later this month. This time to passive house builders. <a href="https://aus.social/tags/BuildingScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BuildingScience</span></a></p>
SeaFury 🦜🍉<p>Blower door test at Fossil Bluff near Wynyard. Airtightness was measured to be 3.87 ACH@50Pa <a href="https://aus.social/tags/BuildingScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BuildingScience</span></a></p>
brownfox-ff<p>Ideal house features, including design</p><p>If I could build a house from scratch: rammed earth walls, metal roof, proper sitting and site design to catch warm sunshine. You could do a lot to both stay warm and stay cool using only passive elements, without needing any power. Doesn't that sound handy right about now?</p><p>I am greatly inspired by Ben Falk and WrathOfGnon with their discussions of traditional building techniques and passive resilience.</p><p>Here is Part 2 on my list of ideal home elements - <a href="https://brownfoxff.substack.com/p/ideal-house-do-overs-with-better" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">brownfoxff.substack.com/p/idea</span><span class="invisible">l-house-do-overs-with-better</span></a></p><p>I especially like Energy Vanguard's description of the "hot water rectangle" - <a href="https://www.energyvanguard.com/blog/efficient-hot-water-delivery-with-a-simple-tool/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">energyvanguard.com/blog/effici</span><span class="invisible">ent-hot-water-delivery-with-a-simple-tool/</span></a><br>How often have you run the tap waiting for hot water? brownfox-ff<p>House Improvements you can make without changing the design</p><p>Hey home experts - if you won the lottery and could make any improvements to your house, what would you do?</p><p>I'm first going through a list of changes that don't require breaking any walls.<br>A metal roof? Hot water heat recovery? I'd love to hear your list. What am I missing?</p><p><a href="https://brownfoxff.substack.com/p/ideal-house-do-overs-without-changing" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">brownfoxff.substack.com/p/idea</span><span class="invisible">l-house-do-overs-without-changing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/resilience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>resilience</span></a> <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/BuildingScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BuildingScience</span></a> <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/house" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>house</span></a> <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/renovation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>renovation</span></a> <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a></p>

Trees create shade and reduce the ambient temperature around your home. Plant trees in appropriate spots where they won't dig into your foundation. This may take some forethought and planning but also helps the planet. brownfox-ff<p><a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a> Hello! I am a Zone 3 gardener who loves <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/permaculture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>permaculture</span></a> , planting trees, and trying to grow food forests. I love <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/BuildingScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BuildingScience</span></a> and learning how to fix or improve my house. Lately I have been getting into passive house design, insulation, and <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/resilience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>resilience</span></a> - reducing our house energy use, conserving water with rain barrels, etc.</p><p>I'm a fan of <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/Homesteading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Homesteading</span></a> but also <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/GoodUrbanism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GoodUrbanism</span></a> - constructing buildings with local materials and traditional techniques so they can be cheaper, last longer, be more resilient, and better for the planet. For example <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/RammedEarth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RammedEarth</span></a> walls and thatch roofs. I write book reviews and longer notes on <a href="https://brownfoxff.substack.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">brownfoxff.substack.com/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
