Interrupting my usual programming to say that I read my first ever graphic novel/memoir/anything! Thanks to @tenspeedpress for sending me This Beautiful Ridiculous City by Kay Sohini, which finally prompted me to engage with this genre.

As a former urban literary scholar this was a return to my urban literary roots, and just a beautiful representation of the city overall. Full disclosure that Kay and I were at Stony Brook University doing our Ph.D.s in different lit departments around the same time. We’ve worked together before (she invited me to present on an MLA panel on careers back when I was about a year into my new life in publishing).

Reading books by people you know (even tangentially) is always a unique experience because you’re seeing the world through the eyes of someone that you’ve met, engaged with. It’s just a really different experience than reading works by a stranger (which is the majority of my reading).

What is really stunning about this work is that it isn’t just a book, it’s a beautifully conceived object. The artwork and color palette are stunning. I immediately felt like I’ll definitely reread and return to this book to take in the visuals and the nuances of the story.

It’s also a book I could see leaving out on my coffee table, or some other flat surface that needs a little life. It’s so vibrant, and a book I could see myself just thumbing through casually to brighten my day.

It deals with serious life challenges, but I think the seriousness and introspection of the work is offset by the brightness and vibrancy of the artwork.

10/10 would recommend. (And believe it or not I read a TON and don’t recommend or post about a large percentage of what I read).

QOTD: have you read any graphic books?

AP Goodman reviews How to Sell Your Blood and Fall In Love, saying "If you're looking for a classic trope melded with diversity and enjoy the True Blood Vampire vibes, this one is for you!"

The author clearly spent time thinking about developing their characters and how they wanted to highlight their physical differences and Neurodiversity. While the characters truly stood out, the plot is very familiar. You root for the vampires, sneer at the hunters, and hope the romance blooms into everything you hope for it to be. If you're looking for a classic trope melded with diversity and enjoy the True Blood Vampire vibes, this one is for you! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #IndieInkAwards #indie #indieauthors #indieauthorsunite #honestreview #awardsjudging #paranormal #romance #lgbtq #fantasy #fiction"6 likes, 0 comments - a.p.goodman on August 11, 2024: "Title: How To Sell Your Blood & Fall In Love Author: D. The Strawberry Post reviews Wishhobbler, saying "The writing style and the story is a little all over the place at the start, which made so I wasn’t sure if I would like this book or not, but after sticking with it for a bit it really did grow on me ... especially the quirkiness and uniqueness of this tale."

A.P. Goodman reviews Teacher of the Year, calling it "a gripping MM romance sure to warm anyone's heart." She also says "no matter where we are on our journey, we deserve love. We deserve to accept it and to give it. Having broken pieces does not mean we're not worthy."

With the benefits of both a cozy romance and a spicy one, it is impossible not to fall for both MMC characters. Marvin is a quirky, awkward, adorable kindergarten teacher, and Olin is a suave, charming, steadfast businessman. I loved the Jewish representation of Marvin as well. It felt authentic and added to the story and his character since the book is in his POV. I think the characters beautifully highlight that we all have our struggles, and we all do the best we can with them. However, no matter where we are on our journey, we deserve love. We deserve to accept it and to give it.
