I was 8 when I met Rene in kickboxing. North Van just had such a tiny Black population. I see more Black folks in my little mountain region than I did my entire first 10 years of life.</p><p>And in high school, a Black friend saved our lives when a guy showed up at a youth center with a gun. My friend had been lipping off to some dickheads, one of whom called their brother, who just happened to have a mutual friend in Souleyman, who talked him down.</p><p>I have a few more anecdotes but I'll save them for now.
