Here's a closer look with a screenshot, cropped and slightly sharpened, for a view of the painted rudder and winglets to figure out who's the customer for this Boeing 737 MAX8. (edit: the top stripes on the tail look like Norwegian Air Shuttle. But the winglets would be a new style for them.) #KPDX #aviation #avgeek #travel
The latest brand new Boeing plane to arrive in Portland #KPDX for painting isn't obvious to me (from the painted rudder and winglets) which airline it will go to. Perhaps it's a non-standard "special livery". This is a 737 MAX8 whose first flight was cancelled 2 days in a row before flying from the Renton #KRNT factory today . #aviation #travel #avgeek

"Southwest Airlines will require passengers to keep chargers visible due to fire risk" by @npr - As battery charger packs have become more energy dense, they've also increased as fire hazards. SWA will require on May 28 all chargers in use be kept visible, allowing crew to more quickly deal with fires. Charging devices in overhead bins will be disallowed. https://www.npr.org/2025/05/21/nx-s1-5406294/southwest-airlines-will-require-passengers-to-keep-chargers-visible-due-to-fire-risk #aviation #travel #avgeek #tech

Wow! Eleven years since I had the amazing opportunity to fly onboard Honeywell Aero's CV-580 test bed.
It was a very effective EGPWS (enhanced ground proximity warning system) demo. They loaded us up, and nearly flew us into a mountain, on purpose.
Nothing quite like being on a 60+ year old plane aimed at a mountain, seeing the terrain get closer out the window, hearing the alarms, and seeing a red blob on the screens. And then a very loud and powerful bank away. #AvGeek

Since I moved to Portland last year, I have a hunch DB Cooper must have had ties to the Portland area. From my home in NE Portland I can see PDX Airport, which is where the passenger who called himself "Dan Cooper" (probably a reference to a comic book skydiver) boarded NW 305 in Nov 1971. And from here I can see mountains to the north near La Center, which was part of the search area where he jumped. It doesn't seem like a coincidence the story ends within sight of its start. #aviation #avgeek
Hmmm... I see that on Wednesday, Discovery Channel has a new episode of "Expedition Files" which includes the description "The true identity of the plane hijacker DB Cooper may finally be revealed". Ummm... "may"? Given the uncertainty of that wording, I'm not sure if this warrants attention. So I won't provide a link - look it up if you're sufficiently interested.
We'll see if it has anything worth talking about. #aviation #avgeek
My glider needs a tug that can pull it from the landing spot to the transport trailer or hangar.
That distance may be over a mile at larger airfields.
Glider clubs often use electric golf carts, but those are expensive and way too big for the task. I need a rig that can easily be put in the bed of my truck.
An electric scooter?
Some of them have larger tires, more powerful motors, a larger payload capacity.
Today I tested this model:
https://www.isinwheel.com/products/isinwheel-hyper-x-700w-electric-scooter-with-seat
I measured the static pull...about 40 pounds of force.
That is plenty for pulling a 600 pound glider when you consider that rolling friction is about 1/50th of a vehicle's weight. That comes to 12 pounds.
I don't need high speed. You tow at a fast walk or slow jog.
I don't need dozens of miles of range.
And it's fun to ride.
Need more power for a heavy two-seat glider?
