A little cat-related news today …
Lola Falafel’s unquenchable urge to explore – and to perch on the highest possible place – has twice led her to jump on top of my upward-facing #Atmos speakers.
This, of course, is problematic. When she lands on the speaker cloth (a thin frame held on the speaker by magnets)
the cloth slides off, Lola slides off, and #Catastrophe ensues.
So I made protective covers for the two center Atmos speakers. (It really is excellent wire mesh!)
I just wrote #Atmos climate & culture magazine asking them to join the Fediverse. I love the writing, photography and podcasts from this nonprofit media org. I subscribe to their newsletter, but it would be nice to have them in my feed, as well. The new podcast episode with #AdrienneMareeBrown on #transformation and accountability rooted in care challenged me and put me at peace.

The #Atmos mix of Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is appropriately chaotic! Vocals literally floating all over the spatial spectrum, but somehow in a controlled creative way. For other spatial remixes this would probably be considered stunt-mixing but for the Wu it really works

Weekend tinkering: build an absolutely non-THX-certified #Dolby #Atmos 7.1.4 setup with nothing but the Music app, Audio Midi Setup (AMS) and a bunch of disparate DACs, amps and speakers all handling some of the 12 channels. The relative magic here is that AMS will do the appropriate Atmos decoding which allows mapping of 5.1.2 or 7.1.4 channels to output devices of choice, grouped in an arbitrary aggregate virtual output device. Afterwards all that's left is a little latency correction with #AudioHijack and we're off! #LFG
Randomly ran into composer/artist Anna Meredith who has quite the wildly eclectic oeuvre. Lots of good stuff but "Nautilus" from 2012 and its later versions really grabbed my attention which I guess has to do with my penchant for weird polyrhythmic song structures, brass and bass wobs. Great #Atmos mixes on later versions as well. #BrassAndBassWobs

At last, I’ve got all six Klipsch Dolby Atmos speakers sitting on top of the 7.1 system.
The first photo was taken from the back of the studio, standing up. It’s a little distorted, because it’s a panorama.

With the addition of #HDMI #passthrough in #macOS15 I’m finding renewed use for my surround receiver that started gathering dust in recent years. FTR, #atmos is utter garbage.
No, I don't care that you got conned into buying $2k of a shitty, plasticky, disposable system that added two extra channels, without a decent return/benefit for it.
"Atmos" is just (tldr) bouncing sound from the ceiling to simulate sound coming from above. Unless you are listening to the system in a room within the very, very narrow specs of ceiling height, material, etc, you just wasted bandwidth, materials (plastic, wood, wires, etc), and my patience. Even when configured to optimal specs, atmos sounds like dogshit.

90% of everything works with 5.1;
No, none of the "newer" codecs are better than DTS HD Master or Dolby TrueHD;
No, two subwoofers are not necessarily better than one;
Bluetooth is utter shit;
HDMI ARC is shit, and HDMI after 1.3 is about the same.
Korean companies never made anything audio that sounded remotely good or was not disposable crap;
PMPO rating is a scam;
More wattage does NOT mean better sound;
Louder doesn't mean better;
Brand cables are a scam;
Looks of a speaker don't mean shit for the sound;
More expensive doesn't mean better.
Why would anyone want this? What’s next make everything sound like it was recorded at Sound City?
Does anyone like or listen to #Dolby #Atmos mixes? It’s all novelty and running out of new revenue streams.

Just set up some height channels with some old speakers I had collecting dust. Ran the YPAO set-up and turned on an atmospheric scifi show. Sounds amazing except for a small crackle in one of the speakers..... 
Now trying to convince myself not to buy new speakers to replace the old ones....
Edit - Will power lasted about an hour. Dang.

1) I didn't realize that Apple was heavily subsidizing the creation of Atmos mixes (makes sense!)
2) It's good to hear that some artists are taking it seriously and having the original production teams work on remixing the songs.
Is this the best song on my album? I’m slowly coming to think so – it wasn’t even up there as one of the top songs when I was making the album, but now it’s all over and released and I can listen to it as though it’s someone else’s, I now think this is the best one (shame, there were some others I imagined would be my favourite – maybe they tried too hard and this simply didn’t)
Also, it’s a positive uplifting song to give you a good state of mind – ejnoy!
