Federal data is disappearing. On Thursday (TODAY), meet the teams working to rescue it and learn how you can help.
Join the Internet Archive and the Library Innovation Lab on Feb. 13, 3pm Eastern for a special event exploring the terabytes of data they have already saved and how to access it.
In the last two weeks that I will be at my job of 20 years, I’ve been inspired to finally deal with a box of news clippings about the school’s history going back to 1964. I gave myself a very fast and dirty introduction to archiving, then got to work. I’m LOVING this project! And now I think maybe I would like to be an #archivist? Or at least learn more about it? I’d also like to show an archivist my project and learn what I did right (if anything) and wrong (probably quite a lot). #librarylife
Sergio Gor, the director of the White House's Presidential Personnel Office, announced the dismissal of the #archivist, at #Trump's direction, on X. "We thank Colleen Shogan for her service," Gor said.
Shogan, who was not in office when the #ClassifiedDocuments investigation began, said on LinkedIn that Trump had fired her without citing a reason or cause. "I have zero regrets - I absolutely did my best every day for the National Archives & the American people," she wrote.
#Trump fired Colleen Shogan, the #Archivist of the #UnitedStates….
The national archivist is responsible for overseeing government records & heads the National Archives [#NARA], an agency Trump has repeatedly criticized since it alerted the #DOJ to Trump's mishandling of #ClassifiedDocuments in early 2022.

I’ve been thinking lately (always a mistake) about all the cultural works to which we don't have access. Everything removed from streaming; everything locked behind DRM so that most libraries and archives won't have copies which can redundantly survive disruption. Sometimes I get real sad about the future readers and historians and others who just won't be able to find copies of the incredible things made during the current digital dark age.
As ever, I try to let this radicalize me rather than lead me into despair. I know that there are lots of horrors worth raging against, but this is one I feel well-positioned to work against. It's low-stakes enough that I won't feel self-loathing if I burn out or need to take a break. It's no secret that I like to read and organize books so this is a topic close to my heart and one which can bring me joy and allow me to share it with those around me too. There is a fair bit of tech nerd stuff to it, enough that I have an opportunity to learn & practice new things, but not so much that I’m totally out of my depth. And there are plenty of communities out there to help and share strategies.
But the big thing I see missing from my understanding and many of the conversations about shadow libraries and unauthorized archivism is the social and professional practice of librarianship rather than mechanical practice of data storage. I don't have space to go to library school, but I could definitely stand to read (and archive) introductory books on the topic, or take an online class. Friends who know: what are some of the better places to get started with an introduction to library & information science and archive science? #libraries #librarian #archivist #archives #archivism #archivist #libraryScience #informationScience #archiveScience #culture #repositories
If I had been the archivist in chief at the White house, I had booked a mandatory educating hour with the new president to very thoroughly and decidedly explaining to him that he can NOT do as he wishes with the records...!
(after that hour, I had fled the room, unable to endure more)
Hey GLAM folks, spreading the word about this book about #disability and #archives, both from a user & #archivist perspectives. It is ironically not very accessible, print only, only owned by 2 libraries total according to Worldcat, & $$$. It is a sorely needed discussion in the profession, so let’s get it into some more institutions! Suggest it to your acq folks, spread the word, let’s make sure the book makes some noise!

Are you an American #archivist interested in #labor issues in our profession? Please consider self-nominating for the Society of American Archivists Archival Worker Labor Task Force, which is a new three year task force responsible for identifying, analyzing, and prioritizing archival worker labor (including students and interns) issues that SAA can impact. You have until December 15 to apply! https://www2.archivists.org/news/2024/be-the-change-call-for-saa-leader-self-nominations
Librarians, Archivists:
Yesterday I wrote a short statement of my opposition to trumpian fascism and hid it in an archives where it cant be found but will someday be stumbled upon.
Consider creating a secret archive of statements from colleagues and students, such that if we should disappear or be murdered, our testaments will appeal directly to future historians. Also consider some secrecy around this project, or having it backed up in some secure location.
Updated intro since I've changed jobs. I'm Chris Levesque, a historian of the #VietnamWar with interests in connections between gender, religion, and war. In my day job, I'm the Digital Collections Archivist at the University of West Florida and the Archivist at the UWF Historic Trust. I'm mostly on BlueSky Social these days.

Did you know? The #UnitedChurch once operated a home and school in #VictoriaBC for #Chinese and #Japanese girls and women. Today, many are surprised to learn this. Margery Hadley, a professional #archivist and member of #FirstMetropolitanUnitedChurch in Victoria, has recently completed a #digitization project that makes the images of the Oriental Home and School available online. It opens to us a now distant world and its concomitant issues.

#FirstMetArchives has been privileged to care for two important historical documents from the #OrientalHomeAndSchool. The first is the #ChineseRescueHome Advisory Committee minute book, 1896-1915. The second is the Oriental Home and School album, a fascinating assemblage of 95 photographs of the Oriental Home community, mainly between 1907 and 1916.
The Oriental Home and School album is now available online. It is part of First Met’s #historic #photographs digitization project that involved digital scanning and description of over 500 images from our #archival collections. These photographs are available to the public on #Flickr. The Oriental Home and School album is one of ten sets of First Met’s #HistoricalPhotographs available for public viewing.
First Met gratefully acknowledges the generous financial support of the #BritishColumbia #History #Digitization Program (2015), sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, #UBC.

@rainbowrodeomag Also I'd love people's follow suggestions for #americana or #vinyl or #history / #archivist accounts
Very long-shot request here... but does *anyone* have an original VHS rip of the Seybold New York 1998 keynote by Steve Jobs? The MP4 available on archive.org has some nightmarish codec issues, and the only version on YT is 144p.
Even if it's not a first-generation rip, I'm sure we can do better than this
Sorry for all the hashtags here, trying to get a little exposure on this.
Thanks!
Happy Saturday! We're delighted to launch this year's hashtags. Have a look at the topics and share any archives you find that relate to the topics. We love to share what you find :)

It's been a minute, or more like half a decade, but we've finally reprinted our infamous "Circle-A" Archivist t-shirts, and they're available in our swag shop:

Betcha know someone who'd really like to find one of these in the sukkah this year!
