Sometimes it can be very difficult to work out when an older building was constructed, other times it's really easy. Willowbank Primary School in the West End of Glasgow falls into the easy category for obvious reasons!
Dramatic lighting for a parking garage. #brutalism has its moments.
This blog post has a roundup of some of the incredible #ArtDeco buildings constructed at this time or shortly after https://citybeautifulblog.com/2022/08/03/art-deco-in-new-york-1920s-1930s/ #design #architecture #ArchitecturalHistory

Great piece on the need for architects to say goodbye to their concrete dreams and consider less carbon intensive building materials

So adorbs, right? Yes, you can still get ice cream there in the summer.
I love buildings that take the shape of what they are. This one isn't quite cone shaped, but it's pretty close. Maybe milkshake shaped?
In Learning from Las Vegas, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown called these buildings "ducks" because they used shape (form) to convey meaning. You know just from looking at it that it's something good, right?

My job occupies a historic jail, so I'm interested in prison architecture. I got a chance today to get pictures of the RI Maximum Security Prison, which put my little county jail out of business in 1957.
The architecture is very forceful, reflecting the 19thc belief in the power of institutional reform.
Interestingly, I was not interrupted while photographing.

Hi everyone! I know there's a lot of new Mastodon accounts out there so here's another #Introduction post.
I'm an #ArchitecturalHistorian teaching the history of architecture and art at #CommunityColleges in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm also very active in the Society of Architectural Historian (I know our members are on here somewhere ) and love writing about architecture when I have the chance.
It seems fitting to start things off with this...#Introduction
I'm an architectural historian, but not one who is particularly interested in pretty buildings.
Instead, I follow vernacular trends and less-examined details in the built environment.
With a PhD in architectural history, patterns from the past come alive for me. Most posts will be about something quirky that I saw.
Eg, this house built of mastodon bones. So cool!
A belated #Introduction. I am an architectural historian who specialises in hospitals. Worked for many years at the Survey of London, now in Fife, on the east coast of #Scotland, and in final year of a PhD on NHS hospital architecture in Scotland.
I also knit and garden a bit, am married with a grown up daughter and a juvenile delinquent cat, plus some chickens.
