Continued thread

Alright, I've updated the gentoo on the virtual machine. Now to add some seasonings that made my Arch Linux my dish.

After the seasonings, I'll dd this to a blank plate and work from there. Then backup Arch Linux install (with dd of course), add some preservatives and refrigerate

And then finally. I will commit the install to my main dish

This will probably take a day or two. I've done a lot on this almost 3 year old Arch install, but I'm gonna do this later. I'm hungry!

I think it's about time I ditched Arch Linux for Gentoo. Arch has gotten easier and I've gotten bored with it. Once I've settled to Gentoo, I'd have Void Linux scratch my "Arch Linux" itch

I mean, I've already explored Linux distros with different inits. I don't think anything can stop me when I have Arch, Gentoo, and Artix wiki handy

www.gentoo.orgWelcome – Gentoo LinuxThe website of Gentoo, a flexible Linux distribution.

... Work never stops

In my spare time, I have been hard at work on a script that will be combining all other DE install scripts into one, with exception of #Cosmic which will remain standalone for now. Instead I added #XFCE.

Once testing is complete, will update the Wiki with new instructions.

P.S : No, there are no plans to create an XFCE spin of the Distro.

In the wake of #unplugTrump, I asked #Distrowatch which #Linux distributions originated in #Europe. I confess that I left out the eastern countries. There were only six results, five of which were based on #Debian. Whether #Arch #Debian or #Fedora, how strong or extensive is the American influence anyway? Isn't it more about individual software or services themselves, such as #Firefox or #Google? #Microsoft and its #Windows should of course be banned in principle. But as an #ArchLinux user, should I change my system because of this?

Tis half-past pumpkin-hour, & i'm about to go beddybyes, after a day that did not go anything like i had expected. All plans went out the window Sat morn when during the beginning of my day's pooterising, i suddenly noticed via my Plasma desktop widget, & my #Conky, that the cpu temperature was ~30-40 deg C hotter than normal, & the reason was that its cooling fan was stopped. Bummer.

I immediately put pooter to sleep, to cool down, whilst i planned my actions. Once ready, i woke her up again, inserted my USB stick on which i do my weekly [Sunday] backups, & ran a backup a day early, whilst i nervously watched the temperature. Then fully shutdown, waiting for Sunday when i shall attempt to inspect the fan to see if it's buggered, or [hopefully] just gummed up with dust that i can clean out.

However, i have various things i need to do online [bills & stuff], so coz atm the prognosis for pooter is uncertain, i chose to plan on a worst-case scenario where she's unavailable for days or weeks. Hence, the rest of today was spent getting out my venerable old 2011 lappy, doing the backlog of [#Fedora #KDE #Plasma] updates, transferring all my pooter's backed-up data from stick to lappy's SSD, then re-customising all my main app settings to get the form & function more or less the same as i have on my #ArchLinux #KDE #Plasma pooter. I really can't quite believe all the hours this cumulative process has taken, OMZ.

Not whingeing, just quite tired now, & still a bit discombobulated.

I'm not sure how many people on here run archlinux, but recently, a contribution I made to speech dispatcher, namely the pipewire module I talked about a while ago on here, got in the arch package.

Before wooping with joy and other similar feelings because something I made, with the help of the maintainer of course, got into a mainline distribution people actually use, not just in my computer, it'd be really nice if I could know whether it made any tangible difference.

So then, here are afew of the things I hoped to come true with the introduction of a pipewire native audio module:

* less battery usage by speech dispatcher
* the ability to be able to speak normally, even in high stress environments, such as low-memory and so on
* lower cpu consumption
* lower latency when speaking and being interrupted often, the case of screenreaders fits perfectly here

Now, I'm absolutely no statistician, and I don't know how to even begin to measure any of this. So, here is me asking help from the wider fediverse.

For the people who know how any of this part works, can you take afew measurements of the performance of speechd, both with and without the pipewire support enabled? I'm primarily interested in the situations I mentioned before, especially the latency, does well under load and consumes less resources aspect.

For anyone who sees this, can I please have a boost? :p it would be incredibly helpful for me to know if this improved anything, even if one bit, and if it was worth going on and on about latency improvements regarding pipewire. I tried to do local tests with sound first, the results were positive, and so was my experience with using speech dispatcher with this module enabled. It could be because of my older computer, but I definitely feel a difference, although not a huge one. If there are other bottlenecks, I'm not sure they're in audio anymore, unless my code is flawed, which could definitely be and a deeper review on that by someone who knows audio stuff better than me should probably be done at some point, but I'm trying to get an inkling into the benefits this had, if any.

So after moving my old laptop upstairs, I decided it was a good time to upgrade Ubuntu.

Big mistake.

The upgrade failed with no errors. It just would not boot up and I decided that I can't be bothered to figure out why.

I'm going to install #ArchLinux on this bad boy.
