They're robots or creatures. Maybe think of them as Ants*. But now you can just code up their behavior. Make a grid, put an Ant (data structure) in each cell, run a little sim of its behavior each turn. Like, those HackWaste maps are CA "squiggle" drunken walks, with a floodfill to make every open space walkable, another pass for bases, etc.</p><p>I had a little wilderness sim long ago ('90-ish) that was kind of Life with many plant/animal types with their own rules. The sticky edges were due entirely to a bug in my projection code. The box size is just slightly less than 1 so that it fits in my collision detection grid and when projecting z, I failed also to project x and y.
