Fair warning about fire risks in Australia.

The only thing I don’t like about the comments here is the focus on fires that had a direct impact on livelihoods.

There have been several recent fires that didn’t directly affect communities. But it proved that regions that have never experienced fires for tens and hundreds of years are now at risk.

A milder example, but still a reminder about why Australian corrections facilities are a toxic place for ‘corrections’ and ‘rehabilitation’.

Interesting developments with Tom Emerson sucking up to Andrew Barr, and making a parliamentary agreement with Labor. We presumed he and Fiona would be working together but this is now in doubt. What happened to independence? His father's son! #ACTpol

Great work, Rat and co. ACT Greens grew a spine.

Next step - gang up with independents and the Liberals to legislate an inquiry into land releases and sales and for fuck's sake, don't let Barr anywhere near its development, implementation or operation.

ABC News · ACT Greens say 'business as usual won't cut it' as the party confirms it won't form another coalition with LaborBy Harry Frost

ACT Greens hold all the power in dealing with perineal Chief Minister Andrew Barr. He'll agree to do anything to form government and cannot do so without them.

A 27-year government is potentially very dangerous across a range of issues, from complacency through to outright corruption. The Greens hold a unique opportunity to act as an effective counter-weight and hopefully will consider their position very carefully, threatening to sit on the cross-bench if a host of demands on transparency and anti-corruption are not met.

They can prove themselves a true progressive alternative, or they can again throw in with Barr's Labor and be little more than a left wing of that party.

We had government and community members work collaboratively to step into the gaps created by economic inequity and social isolation during COVID-19, making sure that families could put food on the table, our older people and those with health conditions and carers were less isolated, and making our community a kinder and more compassionate place.

Thanks Canberra. It’s been real. Hope to see you around in future.

🧵 This weekend saw the Democracy Reset Button pressed. And when we turned the Assembly off and back on again, I’m not part of it.

Over the course of my four years in the Legislative Assembly, I got to be part of some really important changes that only happened because we had six Greens MLAs.

From a ‘news’ article on the ABC site today:

“A Liberal victory at this ACT election required an enthusiastic mood for change across the territory, to make gains in almost every electorate.”

A change from what? More importantly, to what? Those are the questions to be answered. But, hey, no… the ABC is content to echo a Liberal post-defeat talking point. Watching less and reading less ABC stuff by the day I am sad to admit.

It goes on to say:
“To the extent voters were dissatisfied with a long-term Labor government, they still could not be persuaded to cross over and elect the Liberals.”

I would have thought that, given the poliing results, they obvioulsy were not dissatisfied. Futhermore, time in office does not come into it at all, that’s another baseless Liberal talking point. More importantly, Canberrans did not buy into the proposed Liberal policies (or lack thereof) or their right-wing alternative govt, and that decided the outcome. The ACT has long been a ‘progressive’ jurisdiction and that is something the conservative Liberals do not aspire to, simple as that.

So… at 4:28 am, it’s currently looking like a fairly disastrous results for the Canberra Liberals.

They have a 0.9% swing against them. Given the “it’s time” factor, to go backwards is pretty terrible.

Combined with the 3.3% swing against Labor, that’s a moderate shift away from the major parties.

With close to half the votes counted in the ACT election:

• Liberals out-polled Labor on primary votes in a traditional Labor stronghold.

• Swing of 6 per cent against the Barr Government coalition of Labor and Greens.

• Independents went off, potentially taking two seats (out of 25) from the party machines.

• Greens saw a collapse of more than a third of their primary vote in the electorate that hosts their leader.

Big Winners - Independents
Winners -Liberals
Losers - Labor
Big Losers - Greens

And for all that, Barr will probably still be Chief Minister and nothing will change.
