Nicola Rennie<p>I finally got around to writing up a ✨ chart makeover ✨ blog post based on my (deliberately) bad chart created for the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/30DayChartChallenge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>30DayChartChallenge</span></a>! 📊</p><p>Link: <a href="https://nrennie.rbind.io/blog/chart-makeover/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nrennie.rbind.io/blog/chart-ma</span><span class="invisible">keover/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/RStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RStats</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/DataViz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataViz</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ggplot2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ggplot2</span></a></p>

Sam Van Horne, Ph.D.<p>For day 2 of <a href="https://vis.social/tags/30DayChartChallenge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>30DayChartChallenge</span></a>, I made an area chart in <a href="https://vis.social/tags/rstats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rstats</span></a> to show the increase in automobile crashes in Delaware (and the proportion in which alcohol was involved). It might be a stretch to call it a slope chart. :) <a href="https://vis.social/tags/dataviz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dataviz</span></a> </p><p>Code: <a href="https://github.com/bardolater/30DayChartChallenge/blob/main/2025/02_Slope.r" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/bardolater/30DayCha</span><span class="invisible">rtChallenge/blob/main/2025/02_Slope.r</span></a></p>
Nicola Rennie<p>When I decided to visualise the same dataset on income inequality for all 30 prompts of the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/30DayChartChallenge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>30DayChartChallenge</span></a>, I wasn't sure how I'd manage to make the prompt of "Birds" fit with that data... 🐦 But I managed to shoehorn some data about birds in there!</p><p>The result? A "correlation is not causation" / "dual axes are bad" plot in the style of Spurious Correlations made with <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/RStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RStats</span></a>!</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Day17" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Day17</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/DataViz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataViz</span></a></p>
Sam Van Horne, Ph.D.<p>For day 1 of <a href="https://vis.social/tags/30DayChartChallenge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>30DayChartChallenge</span></a>, I made a quick waffle chart in <a href="https://vis.social/tags/rstats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rstats</span></a> from open data about automobile crashes in Delaware. Di<p>The meaning of "mateship" can be positive or a bit spicy and has changed over time. Have a read of the Wikipedia page: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mateship" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mateship</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>As an aside, I enjoyed the section on "mate":</p><p>"In Australia, a 'mate' is more than just a friend and is a term that implies a sense of shared experience, mutual respect and unconditional assistance.</p><p>"The term includes use in ways other than friendship like getting someone's attention, replacing a name, questioning a statement, letting one know to calm down and referring to someone in a rash or harsh way."</p><p>Mate.</p><p><a href="https://bne.social/tags/30DayChartChallenge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>30DayChartChallenge</span></a></p>
Di<p>Did you know word order in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is not the same as in English? It's a whole different "natural language"!</p><p>Apparently many Australian Aboriginal cultures have also had manually coded language, as signed counterparts of their oral languages!</p><p>Indigenous sign language is not only used by people with hearing loss. Many Indigenous languages are multi-modal!</p><p>There's the Warlpiri language, spoken by about 3,000 of the Warlpiri people in the Northern Territory, and there's Warlpiri Sign Language AKA Rdaka-rdaka ("hand signs") with about 1,500 signs.</p><p>And did you know there are one-handed and two-handed fingerspelling alphabets used in different English-speaking countries?</p><p>Auslan is a visual language using hand shape, orientation, location, movement, and expression! There's about 38 major hand shapes and 25ish variants.</p><p>I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Auslan today.</p><p><a href="https://bne.social/tags/30DayChartChallenge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>30DayChartChallenge</span></a> <a href="https://bne.social/tags/auslan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>auslan</span></a> <a href="https://bne.social/tags/steno" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>steno</span></a></p>
